Peter WEIMER Obituary

News Death Notice

WEIMER, Peter M. Age 65 of Centerville, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Miami Valley Hospital. Pete was born October 28, 1950 in Dayton to the late Jacob and Clara Weimer. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Erin Elizabeth Weimer and two infant sons; brother Thomas Weimer; aunt Mary Donahue; uncles Rev John Cavanaugh, Karl Weimer, and Richard Weimer. Pete is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Jan; daughter Rachel Weimer; son Jonathan (Shelby) Weimer; granddaughter Annie Garton; brother Robert (Gay)Weimer; sister Mary Weimer; brother Joseph (Suzanne) Weimer; sister Katherine (William) Nahhas, many cousins, nieces, & nephews; and his three dogs Dublin, Halle, and Violet. Pete graduated from Alter High School in 1968, received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Dayton and his Master of Science degree from Wright State University. During the course of his 33-year teaching career, Pete taught classes in biology, anatomy and physiology, physics, chemistry, and earth science at Dayton City Schools' Dunbar High School. Pete was the most devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He loved his wife Jan, daughter Rachel, son Jonathan, and precious granddaughter Annie with all of his heart, protected them, provided for them and always made them feel secure. He had varied interests, truly enjoyed people, and was blessed to share life experiences with a very close circle of friends. An avid outdoorsman, Pete loved to fish and served as president, board member, and lake chairman of the Centerville Rod and Reel Club. On most days one could find Pete out in a boat on the lake, laughing and sharing stories with his friends, constructing underwater structures for the fish, or building new docks for the club members. He was a respected member of the International Association of R.S. Prussia Collectors, where he made many friends, served on the Board of Directors, wrote articles, and enjoyed exchanging knowledge with club members. A member of the South YMCA since high school, Pete worked out regularly and enjoyed the friendship of the people he met there. Pete loved sports and was a loyal UD Flyers fan and Bengals fan. He was a vital man who loved life and he will be missed by all of those whose lives he touched. The family wishes to thank the compassionate nurses, patient care technicians, doctors, and all employees serving the patients in the Bone Marrow Unit at Miami Valley Hospital for their exceptional care and empathy. Condolences to family:
I first met Peter in the 1960's when he was a member of the Kettering YMCA judo team. We kept up our friendship through the years at the Y where we both continued to work out and visit.
I will always remember Pete as a dedicated teacher and great all around quality person, and he will be missed by all.

I am forwarding this personal text that I sent to my sister, Janet, from Feb 21, per her wishes and in honor of her husband, Pete...

Dear Jan,

I hurt so badly for you. Words cannot express the sorrow and grief I feel for you and your family.

Shortly after you called yesterday, while grieving, I was flooded with memories of my time with Pete in this life. He was the consummate father, caring, loving, protecting his family. He was a rock, with a great gift of kindness, tempered by a great sense of justice and righteousness infused with his own unique sense of humor. I have always had a great deal of respect for this man that can befriend people with his genuine caring, softly charismatic style, comfortness in character, integrity, and wisdom. He was a good listener and when offering advice, it was always tailor made for the person or situation and would reflect his gift. What a wonderful teacher he must have been.

I remember getting to know him at a party at Robin Bepler's in '77 or '78, shortly after you married. We talked music, Todd Rundgren and David Bowie, and I was always amazed how knowledgeable he was on so many topics. I also have fond memories of visiting you in your first home in Kettering OH, my first year working professionally in Towanda, PA. You invited me out to spend my summer vacation with you. We had a good time. Joked about how you guys squeezed a King bed into a Master bedroom that wasn't much bigger (lol). At a local Pub with you, he challenged me to pick up 3 stir sticks (set up pyramid style), 2 fused at the end with a lighter, one just leaning against them), with only one 4th stick. It confounded me. When he revealed how to, it was so simple! A smart engaging man that brought his science to relation with an infectious demeanor and humor.

I remember mornings jogging with him through your neighborhood and of course, before all that, using his YMCA membership card the summer of '76 when I visited you after a failed encyclopedia sales job adventure that brought me to the midwest. I didn't know him yet, nor had we even met, yet I was passing for his photo ID at the Y ! You insisted it would fly, and sure enough it did!

Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to share my memories of Pete that in my mist of sorrow and thoughts of 'it should have been me, not him', I was comforted by these memories that ushered in and wanted to share them with you.

Janet, he was a wonderful spouse, father, teacher, and friend. I mourn with you, but hold on to those good times we had and find comfort in them. I'm sure you have many great memories as well. I know he would want you to remember him in that way.

It is very late, but I'm not sleeping well and have been thinking of all of you this past afternoon. May God be with you at this time, and reach out to us anytime. Amy and I both want to come and pay our respects, and in support of you and the selfless sacrifices you made in your amazing love and care for Pete. May God be with you,

Love, Fred

Mr. Weimer was an amazing educator who helped change the trajectory of my life in so many ways. Aside from chemistry, advanced chemistry and physics that he taught me during my sophomore through senior years, he interspersed life lessons throughout the daily science curriculum that had a lasting impact on my journey through adolescence and ultimately adulthood. The first thing that I learned from him was that life is not fair. I had never heard that expression until I met Mr. Weimer. Although I thought the expression to be rather harsh at the time, I soon realized what he was trying to teach us. The lesson was that regardless of your current circumstances, whether they be fair or otherwise, you cannot let that consume your thinking and undermine your thought process. You ultimately have to stay focused on outcomes. Some variables are measurable and quantifiable while others are abstract and theoretical. Fairness is abstract so you can't hold onto something that is intangible. However, hard work and a commitment to excellence are measurable and he crystalized that message for us every day in his classroom.
The second thing that he encouraged me to do, was read to my children every night before they go to bed. When my wife and I became parents, I took heed to his message and read to my children every single night until they were able to read us a bed time story. Fast forward 18 years later, our daughter graduated in the top 5% of her high school class of 2,500 students, was a member of the National Honor Society, won Scholar Athlete Award 3 consecutive years and graduated with a 4.3 GPA. My son is a 5th grader, President of the student council and reads at a high school level while my 2nd grade daughter is following in her siblings' footsteps. Our children are an embodiment of the belief system that Mr. Weimer instilled in us, so many years ago and a testament to his legacy as an educator.
Although Mr. Weimer taught us that life is not fair, it's still hard to accept that he is no longer physically here with us. However, I know he would be encouraged and proud that his teaching not only touched me but has become a part of my family's DNA that is an integral part of who we are. My children value learning and excellence because Mr. Weimer demanded that we put our best foot forward, make a commitment to being the best that we could be and see past our circumstances. Life may not be fair, but Mr. Weimer was always fair, he always cared and he is still influencing the next generation. He will truly be missed and I hope his family will take comfort in knowing how much he was loved by the students that he taught throughout his career.

Mr. Weimer was a truly remarkable teacher. He was a huge influence and part of me becoming an Engineer. The tools and methods he used in his classes prepared me and my classmates for college...Even beyond that; life. I am truly grateful to have been a student of his for Chemistry, Advanced Chemistry, and Physics. We should all strive to live in true purpose, class, and influence as he did. He will be missed.

Mr. Weimer, the best Chemistry EVER. I learned so much from him. I never liked Science until I took his class in the 10th grade at Dunbar. I don't think that I have yet to meet someone who had the art of sarcasm down to a "science." I enjoyed his class and the way he taught us. A very good man and he will be missed dearly. Rest in Heaven Mr. Weimer!

Words cannot adequately express how much Pete's friendship has meant to me over the years. He was like my older brother to whom you could always turn for advice. Pete was the smartest man I've ever known - he knew so much about everything and he always knew just what to say. My memories of him are the best - our many victories over the students in our after school basketball games, the daily lunch conversations, our trips to Florida and California, cheering at the Flyer games until we were worn out. Pete was an awesome teacher. The comments of his former students reveal the love and respect with which he was held, what a lasting legacy he left. But he was an even greater person - husband, brother, friend - a truly caring man. I will never forget you my friend, and my prayers will always be with your family.

Dear family, friends and dignified coworkers, and finally students, so many times we don't think much of those we had as teachers or coworkers but I can truly say growing up that there were three men and one woman whom left a lifetime impression on on me . Mr Wiemer and his b.i.s.e.p coworkers my sophomore summer he and Mr Shoeman, MR.Doniisi, and Mrs. Tucker made sciencephalitis som alive for ragtag Group of students you changed all of our lives. Since u was one of the selected few.that got to attend this prestigious program I also got to see the human side of my teachers something I never would have noticed during the school year. Mr Wiemer was a funny man a jokester loved to pick on Me Shoeman and tell him to get a real job , he would tell Mrs Tucker not to blow up the school and tease MerDonosi for being nitpicking yet the four of rhem.were close as could be and showed me a nerd that you could be smart and have friends too. That being an adult was not going to be bad.
Mr Wiemer was smart hard on you but worth your time.
Thank you for teaching me about life.

My prayers and blessings to Mr. Weimer's family and friends.
Cherished memory of an amazing man, teacher, and blessing to many. I am a 1989 graduate from Dayton Dunbar High School where Mr. Weimer taught me chemistry. To this day, I tell people how much of a great teacher he was. I am thankful that I had him. He suggedted that I go to medical school but instead I chose a career in nursing and later obtained my Master's Degree. A few years ago, I was asked to talk to a group of students at Dunbar about nursing. While there, I went to Mr. Weiner's class to tell him how much my experience in his class and how his encouragement to enter the medical field impacted my life. Tears poured down my face as I told him that he made a difference in my life. He thanked me in his cool, laid back manner with an appreciative smile. Mr. Weimer could've taken his gift of teaching to any other school district. Instead, he stayed in a district that needed him! Forever in our hearts!
