Philip Cash Obituary

Philip Cash
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Cash, Dr. Philip Of Marlborough, Mass., 84, originally of South Portland, Maine, died on January 31st at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham, surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Leonard Cash and Margaret (Feury) Cash of South Portland, and brother of the late Eugene Cash of South Portland.
Stories about his lifestyle and habits will last forever in all of us, as he was selflessly determined to put our needs ahead of his own, to nurture our strengths while comforting our weaknesses. He gave us all the love, support and independence to stand alone, persevere, and prosper. Phil went against conventional wisdom as Mr. Mom, while giving his wife Louise a chance to follow her dreams of becoming an opera star. He in turn became a world class medical historian, while always balancing the need to support his wife and three boys. He led by example, sacrifice, and true conviction in his belief of "duty, honor, country".
He graduated from the University of Southern Maine, and received Master's and Doctoral Degrees from Boston College in history. For 30 years he was Professor of history at Emmanuel College, Boston, and during that time he wrote several books including the Medical Men at the Siege of Boston. Upon his retirement he became Professor Emeritus and he focused on the biography of Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse, published in 2006. He also contributed articles to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the Harvard Medical Alumni Bulletin and the New England Journal of Medicine. Philip Cash was a Fellow of the Countway Boston Medical/Harvard Medical Library, a member of the Colonial Society, and the American Association for the History of Medicine. He was a member of First Parish Church, Sudbury. Dr. Cash was a descendant of the Cashes whose name is borne by Cashes Ledge, a historical fishing ground 80 miles off the coast of Gloucester.
He is survived by his treasured wife of 52 years, Louise (Gadbois) Cash, loving sons Adam Cash and his wife Lorraine of Marlborough, Matthew Cash and his wife Carla of Downers Grove, IL, and Ethan Cash and his wife Lori of Sudbury. He is also survived by his brother Robert and his wife Jean of Portland, his sisters Lenora Kierstead and her husband James of North Hampton, NH and Joanna Morrill and her late husband John of South Portland. Dr. Cash's beloved grandchildren are Allison, Benjamin, Andrew, Annie, Jessica, Charleigh, Scarlett and Farrah. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as by many friends and colleagues. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Dr. Cash was my brother-in-law and he was a learned professor as well as a loving and caring father and husband. It's been five years since his passing on January 31. Miss his wit and his amazing knowledge of world history.

In 1986 , T took two history courses with professor Philip Cash and one course in the American musical theater with his lovely wife professor Louise Cash, and what an honor that was to have both Cashs as my teachers, both we're formidable and graceful.
There was a touch of nobility about Dr. Philip that only made his lectures more enjoyable. He was agreat educator who belongs to professors hall of fame. Thousands of student are brighter and smarter today because of him.

I will always be inspired by his teachings...and may God continue to bess his soul.

Dear Louise,

So sorry to learn of Phil's passing. I remember him and the 'old days' at Emmanuel fondly. He always had a joke (usually bad) or some pressing Emmanuel political matter to discuss. I can almost see him now as 'Bear' in the "Honey and Bear" skit that you two made forever memorable. We were serious then, but we knew how to have fun as well, and Phil was always in the thick of it. My thoughts and prayers are with you today.

I wish I could have been there tonight to catch the glimmer and echo of Philip. I only met him a few times, but the the depth of thought was fun to conspire with. Love to Lulu and all.

Dear Louise-I came to know you both when I was Director of Admissions at Emmanuel back in the mid seventies. Phil and I hit it off immediately as we both had similar spirits of irreverence. I bounced many ideas for enhancing Emmanuel's student recruitment off him and asked his opinion on the reaction of the SNDs. He would invariably respond emphatically "Dennis!! You don't understand women!!" Forty years later, I have grown to appreciate more than ever the accuracy of his lesson. Another great memory involves one morning when I sat with him and few of the other male folk at EC. He remarked how thrilled he was at his teaching one of your boys their first prayer. Unfortunately this is not the place to share the three word prayer, but be assured that it was a priceless "Philism". He was a caring and generous colleague during our brief time together and I remember his spirit with admiration and fondness. Peace to you and your family.

Although I didn't know Phil Cash, he was a good friend of my parents, George and Marilyn MacLeod, and was an usher at their wedding. I would like to have met him.
