He was a great person.

I am so deeply saddened to learn that Phil passed away. In the mid-80s, I would take him to the Gym at UC Berkeley to train. He was very enthusiastic and at times seemed like my little brother. As a powerlifter, I was always very impressed with how incredibly strong he was for his compact size.
As stated more eloguently by the other posts, he was a very wonderful person, a gentle spirit and will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to Phil's entire family.
"au revoir, Philippe!"

I was saddened to hear about Phil's passing. Phil and I were on the same floor during our freshman year. While I haven't seen or heard from many of my old friends, they will always have a special place in my heart.

Phil was my roommate at UCSC, two Jewish kids put together by chance. He came into the room looking like a tough bear of man, and within the hour had us all laughing with his stories. He always had my back, and took me weight lifting for the first time. We worked out the entire freshman year, and I went from a 120 pound weakling, to a 140 pound weakling in really good shape. I still stay fit to this day because of Phil. He was a good friend. Thank you Philly "Little Big Man"...

My Dear sweet Babs, my heart goes out to you. Could it be that we were all so lucky to have such a kind soul among us, this life would be a better place.
Hold your memories close, and know he will always be a part of you.
