Philip Vogel Obituary

Philip "Phil" Joel Vogel In San Francisco on April 8, 2011 at age 44. Beloved son of Virginia and David Vogel, and Arthur Saftlas, loving brother of Barbara and Michel Girerd, cherished grandson of Elizabeth Glickler and adored uncle of Max and Alex Girerd. Phil was born in San Francisco and lived his entire life as close to the city of his birth as was possible. He was a graduate of UC Santa Cruz, and held an MSW degree from UC Berkeley and an MBA from the University of Santa Clara. Phil loved football, and was forever loyal to the Oakland Raiders. He enjoyed outings with Urban Diversions, jogging in Golden Gate Park, entertaining and spoiling his nephews, and spending time exploring the ethnic restaurants that populate the City. Phil's soft spot was for cats, or kittens, and he was the long time loving owner of "Kitty," who adopted Phil when he was in kindergarten and moped about looking for him when Phil went off to college. Being a great fan of good health and fitness, Phil did his workouts as a member of the S.F. Jewish Community Center. A natural athlete, he was a superb swimmer, tennis player, and could catch a softball by swiveling backwards while running at high speed. He was also an avid reader and was always enjoyed a good movie. His recommendations for great books and films were spot on. Phil's sense of humor was legendary. His quick wit and dry delivery kept friends and family in stitches, while he managed to keep a straight face. Even as a child, he once brought a book to his first grade teacher and when she said that she would take it to lunch, he quickly asked, "What are you going to feed it?" As a Marketing Manager, Phil was a member of the American Marketing Association, Marketing Sherpa, and the Intuit Alumni Community. Phil's dear friends Hyon and Emily Srna and Ian Schwartz miss him terribly, as do his loving family, cousins Adam, Pam, and Ross, and all those whose paths he crossed in his too short time with us. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Home of Eternity in Oakland. Phil always generously responded to any requests for disaster relief, and donations in his memory can be sent to the Joint Distribution Committee, P.O. Box 530, 132 E.43rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10017.

He was a great person.

I am so deeply saddened to learn that Phil passed away. In the mid-80s, I would take him to the Gym at UC Berkeley to train. He was very enthusiastic and at times seemed like my little brother. As a powerlifter, I was always very impressed with how incredibly strong he was for his compact size.

As stated more eloguently by the other posts, he was a very wonderful person, a gentle spirit and will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to Phil's entire family.

"au revoir, Philippe!"

I was saddened to hear about Phil's passing. Phil and I were on the same floor during our freshman year. While I haven't seen or heard from many of my old friends, they will always have a special place in my heart.

Phil was my roommate at UCSC, two Jewish kids put together by chance. He came into the room looking like a tough bear of man, and within the hour had us all laughing with his stories. He always had my back, and took me weight lifting for the first time. We worked out the entire freshman year, and I went from a 120 pound weakling, to a 140 pound weakling in really good shape. I still stay fit to this day because of Phil. He was a good friend. Thank you Philly "Little Big Man"...
