Phillip Helms Obituary
Mr. Helms was born December 31, 1930 in Union County, NC, son of the late Carl A. Helms, Sr. and Eva Elizabeth Helms. Mr. Helms was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, former church treasurer, was a graduate of Harding High School, served on the USS Coronado, US Navy during the Korean War, was formerly associated with the Allison-Erwin Company, T.R. Helms Construction Company, had served as Vice President with Summey Building Systems and the Mathisen Company as Vice President, had been associated with B and R Realty Company and was a licensed real estate broker and held a master builders license. Mr. Helms had served as President of the West Mecklenburg Optimist Club and was very active in the sports program of the club.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Mary Lee Huggins Helms; children and spouses, Phillip Gene Helms, Jr. and Leslie Alan Helms, both of the home, Lonnie Dale and Rachel Helms of Mt. Holly, NC and Charles "Chip" Nance and Beth Helms of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Ian Keltan Helms, Zachary Dean Helms, Jacob Alan Helms, Timothy Leigh Helms, Shena Cook Avant and Christy Scott; great grandchildren, Chad and Haley; sisters and spouses, Peggy and Clarence Hartsell of Belmont, NC and Betty and Jim Simpson of Charlotte; and brother, Carl Helms, Jr. of Galveston, TX. Mr. Helms was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Long and brothers, Joe, Charles and Ray Helms.
Pallbearers will be Russell Sanderlin, Tommy Helms, Darden Selby, Bill Cahoon, Boyce Christenbury and Rick Huggins.
Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Bethel Baptist Church, 4801 Tuckaseegee Road, Charlotte, NC 28208.
Arrangements by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Charlotte Chapel.
