RALPH DAVIDSON Obituary

DAVIDSON--Ralph P.,Ralph P. Davidson, beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather died on August 1, 2014 at his home in North West Washington. He would have been 87 on August 17th. He is survived by his wife Lou Hill Davidson and children Will, Ross, Scott, Sydney and Mary Elizabeth. He is also survived by ten grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son Dr. Andrew Davidson. Ralph Parsons Davidson was born on August 17, 1927 in Santa Fe, New Mexico to William Clarence Davidson and Doris Parsons Davidson. He served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He received a B.A. in international relations from Stanford University in 1950. Later, he worked in Europe for both the Marshall Plan and the US Central Intelligence Agency. He began his thirty-three year career at the illustrious publishing company Time Inc. as an advertising salesman for Life Magazine in 1954. He served as publisher of Time Magazine in the 1970's and became Chairman of the Board of Time Inc. in 1980. He was often quoted as saying, "Being Publisher of Time Magazine was the best job that anyone could have." Throughout his life, Mr. Davidson served on various boards supporting the arts, such as the New York City Ballet and the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC. He also served as Chairman of the National Business Committee of the Arts. Following his retirement from Time Inc., Mr. Davidson was appointed Chairman of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a position he served in from 1988-1990. Mr. Davidson was also an active supporter of higher education. He was co-chairman of the Independent Commission of the Future of the State University of New York and he served as Chairman of the Board of the American University in Bulgaria. His concern for human and environmental causes led him to serve on the boards of the National Urban League, Refugees International, World Wild Life Fund, Phoenix House and the National Council for Adoption. Mr. Davidson lived a life full of love and concern for others. He was admired for his constant pursuit of knowledge and for his lifelong spirit of adventure. His retirement years were spent in Washington D.C. and Vineyard Haven, MA, where he enjoyed time with his family and friends. They remember him as a renaissance man who read voraciously and would often recite passages from Shakespeare and Rudyard Kipling's Gunga Din. Mr. Davidson is loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who shared in his joy-filled life. Services to honor Ralph's life will be at the Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

August 19, 2014

Dear Davidson Family,

As a very young advertising salesman in NY in the early 70"s, I met Mr. Davidson at a SI sales meeting at Pebble Beach. In an amazing life experience, we wound up walking together, just the two of us, up the beautiful 18th hole to the beach house just off the 17th green, where the evening's dinner was being held.

Mr. Davidson, then Publisher of Time, though he did say "Ralph" when I introduced myself, was as warm, wonderful and genuine as this young kid from Ohio had ever met I was in awe. Truly.

Mr. Davidson asked me more questions than I could ask him in our 10 minute walk together. His memory is indelible and I feel honored to have had that experience with such an extraordinary man.
May we all strive to emulate his exemplary humanity.

On behalf of myself and the Time Life Alumni Society, rest in peace Mr. Davidson.

Dear Lou - I shall be writing separately to you and the family, but I also wanted to say in a more public way how honoured I was to be Ralph's Godson. He was a wonderful influence in my early life and later he was responsible for opening up the big world of the USA to me as a young 18 year old Brit in 1980 - something that I shall never forget. He was fascinating, generous, and full of worldly experience to pass on to the young. He was also an extremely valued and loyal friend to my now deceased parents. My thoughts and sympathy are with you all in this sad time. With love to you all, Philip

Lou, He was one of the most caring people I have ever known. He was always looking to help people all the way to the end. I will never forget the things he taught me. I truly will miss him. As will thousands of others. Lynn Cook

Warm wishes to Ralph's family. I enjoyed working with him in his capacity as a member of the AUBG board, and have thought of him often since my days in AUBG's DC office.

It was my great good fortune to work for Ralph at TIME Magazine in the 60s. He was a wonderful boss. Interesting. Interested. Great with Clients. Great with all of us. He will be missed by all of us who were touched by him. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time.

Dear Mary Elizabeth - I fondly remember you and your father and mother from Horace Mann. Your parents were very gracious and friendly people. I recall a beautiful day when you and Marsh played in your swimming pool. I smile as I remember you father's laugh, the twinkle in his eyes and his warm handshake. You and your family are in my prayers during your grief. Please take extra care of yourself during this time of healing.

I did not know Ralph as some of you did but I subscribed to Life Magazine and in the 1960s,he made it better even if he did not do a lot. I think he probably did more at Time, later and for the corporate folks even later. But,I know how much he valued good writers and photographers and how he loved New York City and made a difference in big and small ways with donations, influence and cultural interests. I am glad so many of you had enough years knowing him after retirement and that his family and friends will have lots of good memories to share and yes, someone should write a book about this good man.

It was one of my life's greatest blessings to have had Ralph for a 40 year friend. We hunted, fished, hiked, floated rivers, laughed, cried and most of all shared. He was my friend and brother through ups and downs. He is not replaceable but I take comfort in knowing we will be together again.
