Bradley's Funeral Home & Crematory - Marion Obituary

Troutdale, VA

In loving memory of Ralph Gordon James, 77, beloved husband, dad, papaw, and friend, who went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, November 10, 2024. He was lovingly cared for during his last days at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Ralph was born on November 5, 1947, in Troutdale, Virginia, to Frank and Mary James. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After returning home, Ralph owned several successful businesses in hospitality and retail. He also enjoyed Christmas tree farming and was skilled in carpentry, creating beautiful furniture. Eventually, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Ralph met Becky in the early 1970s, and they married in 1976. They provided a loving home for their daughters and were happily married for 48 years.

Throughout the years, some of Ralph's greatest joys included providing for and being with his family; working outdoors and fishing; spending time at the family farm in Grant, VA; telling stories; playing with his dog, Hoppy; and making everyone laugh. Anyone who knew Ralph knew how much he loved being a papaw. Over the years, he faced many physical challenges with courage, including those in his last few weeks. His strength and sense of humor in dealing with difficulties will always be remembered.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Rebecca James; his two daughters, Amanda Holland (Nathan) and Cindy James (Jon Grieco); and his three grandchildren, Isabella, Elijah, and Cosima. He is also survived by his sisters, Hazel Farmer and Louise Lawson (Ernest); several nieces and nephews; and many wonderful family members and friends.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Troutdale Rescue Squad and the Rugby Rescue Squad as a special thank you for the care they provided to Ralph during his illnesses. At Ralph's request, the family will hold a memorial in his honor at a later date. Visitation at Ralph and Becky’s home is welcome. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.bradleysfh.com. Bradley's Funeral Home is serving the James family.

Not sure what to say?

To put it simply Ralph was one of the finest people I have ever known. Intelligent, incredibly well read, an engaging conversationalist, imminently practical yet possessing a great sense of humor. Regretfully it just seemed he would always be with us, as it happens with so many we hold dear. Just the other day I was looking forward to another trip Grayson to sit and “solve the problems of the world”. Hail and farewell old friend.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Ralph was truly a wonderful friend and neighbor. Always enjoyed seeing him at the shop. Becky, Amanda and Cindy we are praying for you all.

Amanda, So sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Pam Souther
