Ralph Lorenger Obituary

Ralph Lorenger Jr., son of the late Ralph and Mae Lorenger, was born on February 18, 1930 in Sioux City, Iowa. With a heavy heart, we announce his passing on December 17, 2023. He met the love of his life, Janet (while attending Sioux City East High School) and these high school sweethearts celebrated 70 wonderful years of marriage in August of 2020. They, along with their two sons, Doug and Brad, lived in Sioux City, Iowa. At the age of 18, Ralph enlisted with the United States Naval Reserve where he proudly served his country. He worked two jobs during the child growing years (including night shifts at the Post Office) and yet still found the time to be an active part of the boys activities. One of his fondest memories was the time he spent coaching their Little League Baseball Teams. Ralph worked as a Superintendent for the US Postal Service in Sioux City, Iowa until he retired at age 62. This Early retirement allowed Ralph and Janet the opportunity to spend more quality time and create a lifetime of memories with their children's families. In 1992, they packed up their belongings and moved west from their beautiful home in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa to be near Brad (Holly) and their children in Greeley, Colorado. A few years later, they moved to Kentucky to be near Doug (Shanda) and their children. Ralph and Jan's life mission was to be the best possible grandparents on earth and for those efforts the family is eternally grateful. Ralph had a kind heart, a great ear for listening and was always available for sharing some sound advice. He enjoyed watching and attending sporting events, playing cribbage and shopping for all the grandkids. He never missed a school program, sporting event, birthday celebration or any other opportunity where he could proudly show his love and support for the grandkids. He is survived by his brother Roger Lorenger (Denison, Iowa) and his son Brad Lorenger (Holly) of Windsor, Colorado. Ralph was preceded in death by his beloved wife Janet and son Douglas Lorenger of Walton, Kentucky along with two sisters Betty Shupe (Sioux City, Iowa) and Louise Prichard (Green Bay, Wisconsin). He was the proud and awesome grandfather of 9 and great grandfather to 11. The family asks in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society.

Ralph was my supervisor when I started nights at the PO and he was by far my favorite supervisor.

I used to babysit for this sweet couple, when they used to live on South Olive St.I just lived down the street. I remember three things. First how well behaved their boys were. Second how well they paid me. And finally, when they came home, Ralph would not let me walk home alone. He always walked me home, or drove me. That just showed me how kind and caring he was. That job was one of my favorites to go to. Brad, my deepest sympathy to you and your family on the loss of someone I will always remember. Christine Kopp Lowe

Brad so sorry to hear of your loss. I remember a lot of great times with you at East High. I´m sure you will miss your dad a lot. He was a big part of your life. May you find comfort in the many memories you shared together over the years. God bless you during this most difficult time.
