Ramon Overall Obituary

OVERALL The spirited life of Ramon Towns "Ray" Overall came to a peaceful end Monday, June 27, 2011 surrounded by family as he triumphed in a courageous battle with cancer. Some may have called Ray unconventional; he was truly one of a kind and lived life on his terms. There was the right way, the wrong way and there was Ray's way and he lived that way until the end. Ray was born April 12, 1956 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was a citizen and student of the world attending Episcopal High, Lee High, Nichols State and LSU, more importantly graduating from the "School of Life" Summa Cum Laude. As a resident of New Orleans he became the embodiment of everything the French Quarter had to offer. It was there he had a short acting career having a role in "Exit to Eden" and he also pursued a career in music forming his own band as he played the wash tub base. Ray loved being on the water having two notable stints of life on the water, living on his houseboat on the rivers of South Louisiana, and more recently along the shores of the Yangtze River in China. His real enjoyment came from his family and friends. While he may have been a master of the art of exacerbation he was also the first one to step up when help was needed. Prior to retirement, Ray was founder and COO of Advanced Concrete testing Preceded in death by his soul mate Captain Woof he is survived by his wife Brenda Overton, his sons, his true pride, Aaron Overall and Chet Overall,; his parents, Mathilda Ramon Overall and Robert Clyde Overall; brothers Robert C. Overall, Jr. and wife Cindy, Hall Charles Overall and wife Mary; sister Jeanne Overall Liles and husband Richard along with many nieces and nephews. A celebration to remember Ray will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home and Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans, in true New Orleans style and fashion Wednesday, July 6th, 2011 at 11:00 AM with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. Visitation will also be Tuesday, July 5th, 2011 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans. Serving Ray as pallbearers will be his nephews, Nelson Liles, Greg Overall, Seth Overall, Devon Overall, Robby Overall and cousin Lonny Ramon. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the charity of choice. The family invites you to share your thoughts, fond memories and condolences online at www.lakelawnmetairie.com.

Every time I was with Ray I had fun! What a great guy. I'll miss him too.

I'm really sorry that Ray was not up to staying in China. When Marty and I visited, Brenda's driver, Andy, took us to some of Ray's favorite places. We enjoyed the time spent there while we were missing him.

Ray was one of those rare people whose time on earth was too short. Everyone who knew him will miss him.

I really got close to Ray when he was in High School. He chose to live outside his parents house in a wooden play house that he some how fit a water bed in there and a stereo. That should have been a sign to us all, but I wasn't looking for a sign. I was too busy being amazed, amused, excited, at times appalled and exasperated, but always enchanted with Ray's spirit. So many memories of our first wives...kids and countless other escapades that won't be shared but always cherished. Ray and I lost contact for many years and just in the past few years because of Facebook or some new thing, did we connect again. I had just left Shanghai on yet another trip to find out he was living there! We never got a chance to see each other but the emails began. Some directly others passed on by Hall's family about the fight to beat cancer.
To Ray's family and friends, I offer my sincere condolences to your loss. To all I cheer Ray's life. He will not be forgotten ever.

Ray is a wonderfully prominent feature in the history of my life. Not by any manufactured plot, Ray naturally confounded conventionality, ingeniously irritated institutions, and unapologetically colored outside the lines . . . and brilliantly so. I always admired Ray’s incredible creativity and zeal for adventure. But most of all I appreciated his courage to break ranks and live the life he wanted to live. Ray had a huge heart and he was a loyal best friend to me through thick and thin. I am lucky to have known him. Although his passing breaks my heart, I also can’t help but envision Ray happily ensconced in the next life and already flashing that wildly mischievous grin I know so well. All my love and sympathy goes out to the Overall family in this very difficult time. I know Ray’s passing is a crushing blow and I will keep all of you in my prayers.

Marty and I were so happy to have Ray join the family. When we visited China last year Brenda's driver, Andy, kept us in stitches with tales of Ray's exploits and his one man people to people campaign in Shanghai. We so missed his presence then, as we do now. He was a wonderful person to be around.

When I met Ray for the first time at our family reunion it felt like I knew him for years. He fit right in, and with his own style of larger than life personality, instantly became the star of the event. The way he lived his life is an example to all - he will be truly missed.

I have many fond memories of our family reunions where Ray showed his humor, his patience, and his sweetness.
We all enjoyed his and Brenda's restoration of the 100 year old PA house. Chuck and I were visiting when Ray got word that their home was to be honored by the town of Easton for the improvements.
