Richard Bowles Obituary

Richard Kelly Bowles
GREENSBORO -- Mr. Bowles died on Friday, May 26, 2006 from complications due to Parkinson's disease. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at West Market Street United Methodist Church and the burial will follow at New Garden Friends Cemetery in Guilford College.
Bowles was a native of Monroe, NC and moved to Greensboro in 1937. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served in World War II as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corps. He was active in residential and commercial real estate throughout his life as owner of Bowles Realty and president of Northside Development Corporation.
He served as chairman of the Greensboro Zoning Commission for nine years. He also served as chairman of the Greensboro Heart Association, the North Carolina Heart Association, and the Case Policy Committee of the Greensboro Children's Home Society of North Carolina. Bowles served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greensboro Board of Realtors, Scottish Savings and Loan Association, Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, Better Business of Greensboro, Greensboro Sports Council, The Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc., and Triad United Methodist Home. Additionally, he was also a former trustee of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at Greensboro. At West Market United Methodist Church Bowles also served on the Administrative Board and for many years Head Usher at West Market United Methodist Church. Kelly was an avid UNC fan, golfer and a member of the Greensboro Country Club, the Country Club of North Carolina and Pinehurst Country Club.
Survivor's include his wife of 53 years, Louise Horner Bowles; daughter, Laura Bowles Warren and her husband, Jim, of McLean, VA; son-in-law, Tom Schweers of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Katy, Colleen and Christy Warren of McLean, VA and Kelly and Erin Schweers of Sarasota, FL.; and many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
Kelly was preceded in death by his parents, Hargrove and Kelly Moneyhun Bowles; daughter, Donna Bowles Schweers; son, Richard Kelly Bowles, Jr.; and brothers, John Bowles, Hargrove 'Skipper' Bowles, and James A. Bowles III.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Parkinson's Pharmacology Research Fund, c/o Medical Foundation of North Carolina, 880 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd./Historic Airport Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27514; or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27505; or to a charity of your choice. The family will receive visitors on Sunday and Monday between 4:00-7:00 PM at their home.

Patty Ann called and told me of Kelly's death and June thoughtfully sent me an newspaper clipping and a memorial service program. What a rich, rewarding life and what a loss! Please know you and yours are in my thoughts and prayers.
