Not sure what to say?

I just learned of Richard's passing away today. When I was working downtown, I would often chat with Richard at Planet Fitness before he went out for his run. A kind man. A gentleman in every sense of the word.

I only found out yesterday which deeply saddened me. I was one of Richard's young, City Creek running friends and looked forward to running into him often. He had a great soul, a big heart, and the best laugh. He is deeply missed.

I was one of the countless runners running up and down City Creek that got to know Richard. It was always a treat when he´d stop and visit for a bit and tell you about some of his running accomplishments or even briefly say "looking strong" as we rode past each other. I´m disappointed I missed this announcement. Would´ve loved to pay my respects directly. I´ll miss his presence in City Creek.

I knew Richard thru his political evolvement and went to school with his sister Dee Ann. Condolences to all his family and especially Dee Ann

Richard was a law school classmate who added to the experience by his ability to make friends with everybody and keep things pleasant even in heated discussion of fraught issues. I lobbied him when I was director of the public defenders on criminal law issues. He was reform minded and wanted to hear how a proposed law would impact people in the real world. He was one of the very best public servants I ever met.

I only knew Richard Carling as an elite runner (him, not me) and he was the best of the best. Very sorry to hear of his passing.

Richard, you and I have a lot of the same race finishing shirts. I always expected to see you in City Creek on Saturday mornings or at lunch time on weekdays. Typically you would have a funny comment and some gentle running related encouragement.

Richard and I grew up together on St. Mary's Drive. He and I and our fathers went together fishing on Fish Lake using the Carling boat--I don't think we caught any fish but had a great time. We attended our church meetings and school classes together. We attended law school together. He has been a great example to me.

I first met Dick years ago on the bus at Boston, and would then commonly see him in the latter miles of my long runs coming down City Creek. He always gave me a boost with his friendly words of encouragement. While I will sure miss him, he will continue to cheer me on in my memory. Thanks for the continuing inspiration Dick!
