Dear Janet,
Although we only met once and you probably do not remember me, I knew dick moderately well. Like Dick, I was a student of John Verhoogen’s at the University of California at Berkeley. Dick’s numerous contributions to paleomagnetism are well known and respected. Less well known was how helpful Dick was to many of us in our careers. Unlike most of us, Dick’s humility was such that you could easily forget he was one of the greatest earth scientists of the 20th century.
