Richard Doell Obituary

Richard R. Doell Born in Oakland in 1923, Richard Doell died in his sleep on March 6, 2008 at his home in Point Richmond, CA, following a series of serious illnesses. Richard grew up in Carpinteria, CA. After serving in Europe during World War II, he resumed his studies at Berkeley, married Ruth Jones, a fellow student, and earned his doctorate in geophysics in 1955. Following teaching positions at the University of Toronto and MIT he joined the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, CA, in the Geophysics Branch. His team established a time scale of reversals of the earth's magnetic field, which was of critical importance to the acceptance of the theory of plate tectonics. For this work Richard Doell received the prestigious Vetleson Prize, which he shared with two of his colleagues, and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Richard retired from the Survey in 1978. Having built a 38 feet sailboat he began a series of long sailing cruises to Alaska, French Polynesia, and Northern Europe. In 1984 he married Janet Hoare who joined him on those voyages. Since 1993 Richard devoted much of his time to photography, specializing in the photography of lichens as an active member of the California Lichen Society. He is survived by his wife Janet Doell; daughters, Kerstin Doell of Seattle and Shirley Doell of Point Richmond, CA; and a large family of devoted stepchildren, as well as step grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Janet,
Although we only met once and you probably do not remember me, I knew dick moderately well. Like Dick, I was a student of John Verhoogen’s at the University of California at Berkeley. Dick’s numerous contributions to paleomagnetism are well known and respected. Less well known was how helpful Dick was to many of us in our careers. Unlike most of us, Dick’s humility was such that you could easily forget he was one of the greatest earth scientists of the 20th century.
We will all greatly miss him.

Janet, there's nothing I can say that will make any difference, but for what it's worth I'd like to add my most sincere condolences to all the others who I know you must have received.
I did send the sad news to a couple of others I thought might not be on your list.
Best personal regards, Dick Tagg

We extend to Janet Doell and the family of our good friend, Richard Doell, our heartfelt sympathy on his passing. He will be greatly missed by them and by all who knew him as a kind and generous human being and a creative scientist. He helped and inspired his colleagues in his chosen field of research. He was truly a multi-talented man who accomplished much in his various endeavours. His contributions as a scientist profoundly changed our understanding of the history and dynamics of Earth and its magnetic field. As a student, I knew him from his earliest professional days at MIT. Our deep friendship developed over many years. We shared precious moments while visiting and occassionally sailing with him and Janet in various waters. Their hospitality and friendship is warrnly remembered and cherished by Mira and me.
