I am one of the many high school teachers who benefited from the Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History. I took week-long seminars on such topics as the Civil War, Gettysburg, and Economic and Financial Crises in American History. Each seminar exposed teachers to remarkable professors, experts in their fields, who addressed their subjects as true scholars and gave us their undivided attention over many days. Richard Guilder's contributions to New York City and to American History Scholarship were known to me but not to enough of the public at large. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Guilder once or twice at events at the Morgan Library, perhaps at the University Club of New York.
