I am one of the many high school teachers who benefited from the Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History. I took week-long seminars on such topics as the Civil War, Gettysburg, and Economic and Financial Crises in American History. Each seminar exposed teachers to remarkable professors, experts in their fields, who addressed their subjects as true scholars and gave us their undivided attention over many days. They gave us extensive reading assignments to prepare ourselves to be immersed in complex subjects. They took us to places like battle sites, delving into the minutiae that allowed us to feel we were there. Each one of us could then take back to our students the excitement that comes with a deeper understanding of the complexities that make up history. That depth made us and our students better thinkers.
The contribution of Richard Gilder and Lew Lehrman to an understanding of American history was invaluable. Thank you so much to Richard Gilder for enriching my life and those of my students.

Richard Guilder's contributions to New York City and to American History Scholarship were known to me but not to enough of the public at large. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Guilder once or twice at events at the Morgan Library, perhaps at the University Club of New York. Thanks to Roger Hertog for publishing this tribute to an extraordinary man who neither rested with success nor retired to some sun-drenched place far away from the New York he loved. Ave aqua valle. To the Guilder family, take comfort that your loss is ours.
