I knew Dick for perhaps 25 years. We shared membership in numerous professional associations, and enjoyed each other‘s company. When I heard of his illness, I arranged with Bob Janopaul to have lunch with him at the World Trade Club in the city. We had a nice lunch and shared our recent experiences. The Dick Harlan I Knew

I first met Dickwhen he came to work for Bill Wahler's firm in Palo Alto 45 years ago. We shared interests, and he invited me to dinner at his new home in Sunnyvale. This led to my purchasing a home in the same neighborhood in 1963.

Dick was a mentor and friend to me as I learned the dams and hydropower business. I had many great trips to French Meadows Reservoir and Camino Penstock with Dick, and the conversations we had will stay with me for a lifetime. I will miss Dick, and my thoughts and prayers go out to Florence and your familiy.

I knew Dick from our work together on professional committees. His enthusiasm for geotechnical and dam engineering was inspirational. I am lucky to have had a brief acquaintance with Dick and Florence, and very much appreciated the contageous tales of their world travels and adventures. My sincere condolences to Florence and his family.
