Dear Mrs.Mitchell,
I am very saddened to hear of the loss of your husband and my much beloved coach. It was his first year coaching gymnastics at Washington-Lee and I had just moved up from Stratford Middle School when he asked me in his gym class to come to his first gymnastics team meeting. I attended the meeting and was hooked. I was continually amazed at his ability to rapidly learn all the complexities of this sport. He always exhibited the qualities of a truly great leader and an inspiring coach! All this proven by his skill in taking us in three short years to winning the State Championship. I had the opportunity to see him (and you) at the W-L 75th Anniversary and building renovation ribbon cutting ceremony a few years ago where we reminisced and I had the opportunity to tell him of the tremendous impact he had on my life. I told him of the difference he made in my college varsity gymnastics experience where, thanks to his coaching, I earned a rare varsity letter in my freshman year and each year thereafter. I told him then that I thought of him often (as I still do) and how I appreciated his unique ability to teach and lead by his example how to become better than you ever thought possible. My thoughts and prayers are with you as well as my deep appreciation for sharing him with all of us undeserving guys during after school practice through all those years.
