Richard Anthony Pruitt

September 6, 1947 - June 29, 2025

Richard Anthony Pruitt, 77, of Spotsylvania County passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at VCU Medical Center.

Richard was born in Alexandria, Va., on September 6, 1947 and moved to Spotsylvania County at the age of five. After graduating from Spotsylvania High School in 1965, he attended Texas A&M University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering in 1969. He was a commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps in 1971, served in Vietnam and was discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1973.

Richard returned to Virginia and began working in the engineering field and soon discovered that he wanted to pursue a different path. Richard loved people and thoroughly enjoyed helping others. He embarked on a journey as a professional in real estate that would become his lifelong career passion. He was a Senior Partner with Mid Atlantic Appraisal Group, serving Virginia, DC and Maryland for 30 years. Richard taught at the National Institute of Real Estate for a number of years. Richard was appointed by Governor Douglas Wilder, Governor George Allen and Governor Jim Gilmore to serve on the Commonwealth of Virginia Real Estate Appraisal Board from 1990 to 2010. In 2004, he was the Principal Broker for a number of years with Keller Williams Realty offices in Prince William, Stafford and Fredericksburg offices.

Richard is survived by his brother and sister, John E. Pruitt Jr (Kristen) and Eugenia P. Jones; and one daughter, Courtney L. Pruitt; nieces and nephews, Heather Minor, Bryan Jones, Wanda DeLew, Kimberly Jones, John Pruitt III, Richard F. Pruitt, and Kristen E. Pruitt; and his partner, Sylvia Hoffstetter.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, John E. Pruitt Sr and Louise M. Pruitt; two sons, Richard L. Pruitt and Robert F. Pruitt, and the mother of his children, Robin L. Pruitt.

A visitation for Richard will be held Thursday, July 10, 2025 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, 1621 Emancipation Hwy, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401. A Funeral Mass will occur Friday, July 11, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 9149 Elys Ford Rd, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407. A committal service will follow at the Pruitt Family Cemetery, Spotswood Furnace Rd., Fredericksburg, Va.

Wayne Harbaugh VDOT retired. Worked several times with Mr Pruitt and he was a very nice gentleman and knowledgeable about subdivision streets. God rest his soul and Peace to the family members
