Dick was a force of nature. I vividly remember his huge presence in my office - usually accompanied by a strong odor originating from the farm - in the springtime during cabbage contracting and it struck me that this was not just any farmer but also a very savvy businessman. That negotiation tactic, along with his blustery demeanor meant the Singlers and Van Stratens basically set the price of cabbage for that year. My condolences to those left behind, I hope your memories are joyful.
