Richard Williams Obituary

WILLIAMS RICHARD T. WILLIAMS Richard T. (Reds) Williams, of Centreville, Virginia, died on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, after suffering a long illness. He is going home to be reunited with his beloved wife, Malinda Williams, who preceded him in death. Williams grew up in Oakton and was a lifelong resident of Fairfax County. He was born in Washington, D.C. on December 25, 1930. He is a US Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War aboard the USS Toledo. After his service in the Navy, Williams became the 50th officer sworn into the Fairfax Country Police Department in 1954, eventually becoming the President of the Fairfax County Police Association. He remained on the force until his retirement in 1974 as a Sergeant. During this time, Williams earned his Associates Degree from American University. Williams was passionate about many things in life. He was a sports enthusiast, and particularly enjoyed his time coaching youth sports teams. He loved thoroughbred racing and spent many enjoyable hours at the track. He was a devout Redskins and University of Alabama fan, and also enjoyed fishing and hunting on the side. He was also an active member of American Legion Post 177. Most important, however, was his devotion to his family and friends. Williams is survived by his brother, J. Ronald Williams (Jeanne); four children: Stephanie A. Simpson (Eric), Richard P. Williams (Doreen), Constance J. Williams, and L. Robin Williams; and his grandchildren Jason Welsh, Tatum M. Williams, and Calvin M. Simpson; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives. His parents Jesse N. Williams and Lester Tate Williams preceded him in death. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 13, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Everly Funeral Home, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, Virginia. The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 14, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Legion Post 177. www.everlyfuneralhomes.com
