Not sure what to say?

Except for my Father, I never met a Southern gentleman such as Dr. Durden. Razor sharp mind and made attending his classes a wonderful experience. Duke University was very fortunate to have had his likes teach History. Everytime I read his books or even review my notes of his classes remind me of his bellows of pipe tobacco and the kindness in his voice. Thanks Dr. Durden for the experience of knowing you.

I will always remember a great mentor and good friend.

Bob Durden did so much for me. He was a great teacher and mentor, and he also had a great style!

Bob was an invaluable history colleague, counselor, and friend for me. His distinguished scholarship, teaching, mentorship, and service also helped earn our Department national and international distinction. I'll always remember and revere him.

Bob Durden was my mentor and friend. Through his example he showed me the highest standards of professionalism, generosity, and tactful consideration of others. He was a wise and kind human being and a southern gentleman in all the best senses of that phrase. I'll always admire him.

Bob was a gentleman and scholar of the first order. As a mentor and friend, he guided me through graduate school and always supported me in my professional and personal life. I was privileged to know him.--Jeffrey J. Crow

Dr. D sang us lovely songs & often entertained with marvelous little stories. Perhaps the strongest memories I have were the walks around the gorgeous landscaping he would do around their lovely home, pointing out the...
