I just found out about Roberts passing and wanted to pay my respects.
I went to school for a year with Robert and his brothers Eric and Michael back in the mid 70s at Canterbury School. He was one of my best friends that year as was his brother Eric. We were freshman and stuck together through some great times together. We all played soccer and were promoted to the JV team as freshman and eventually played on Varsity that year as well, we were that good. I never got a chance to reunite with Robert or Eric but I will never forget them and the memories we had that year at school.

I am so deeply sorry to hear about Robert's passing;
As his teacher at St. Basil College Preparatory School
in Stamford CT, I vividly remember Robert well as a fine young outstanding gentleman of the highest caliber—clearly he will be remembered as such.
My heartfelt condolences
to his family and close friends.

Hi Bob, we were waiting for you back to Hamina, but something went wrong, or right. We were ready to hear sad news, but not the kind that Otto told us on that sunday. We miss you so much, my very good friend. You never asked anything, never complained, and we know life wasn`t always nice to you. You tried to tell me what semper fi means, now I may know something about it. Eetu and Otto are fine young men, as you know. Your Jameson is here, if you don`t mind I`ll ask boys to have a shot for you. Thank you for everything... and I gun with you, always. Yours forever: Vesku, Nina & Sade.

Dear Mr and Mrs Hotung, brothers, sister and mostly Eric and Otto,
I was stunned to read of Roberts passing. It would have passed me by had I not picked up the paper while vivting my sister in Wash. DC. I served with Robert in 1983-84 in 2d ANGLICO, Robert was a young Marine assigned to my team. Although I was his Captain and he taught me many things; steadfastness, perserverance and honor. He was an incredibly enthusiastic and hard charging Marine. One could tell he found his calling in the Marine Corps because he did his best at everything he put his hand to. I never had to worry about any assignment I gave him, because if he was involved it would be done and done well. There was no job too hard and nothing too strenuous. He did it all to best of his ability. It was a pleasure serving with him.
For Eric and Otto, if you are half the man your father was then you will do well in this life. This world is better and safer place because your father walked through it.
I served 22 years in the Marines and Robert is one of the finest men I was priveledged to lead. I am retired now and fly as a Captain for a major airline. Your father still comes to mind when ever I am faced with a difficult task. I will miss him.
I wish his family much strength in this time of loss. I will leave you with these mariners word...."...for he has not left us. He has crossed the horizon and a horizon is but a limit of our Earthly sight."
