Robert Lesser Obituary

Lesser, Robert K.
Robert Klein Lesser passed away on March 10, 2017 at his home in Sarasota, Florida. He was born on April 13, 1924 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Lawrence and Diana Lesser.
Robert grew up in Bridgeport, attending Bassick High School. He enrolled at Williams College, but left during his freshman year to enlist in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he served as a navigator on a B-24. After the war he returned to graduate from Williams and then received a law degree from Harvard Law School.
Returning to Bridgeport, he established a private law practice and served for a period of time as a part-time prosecutor in the Circuit Court in Bridgeport. Moving to Fairfield in 1952, he became involved in Fairfield politics and was a member of the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee for over fifty years. He served on the Fairfield Parking Authority for twenty years, most of the time as chairman. He also served as Fairfield's representative to the Greater Bridgeport Transit District, where he was chairman, and the Greater Bridgeport Regional Planning Agency.
Robert was a great-nephew of Jacob Klein, who was the benefactor of the Klein Memorial Auditorium. The Lesser family was instrumental in establishing Congregation B'nai Israel in Bridgeport, of which he was President in 1966. Robert was an avid tennis player, bridge player, stamp collector, thoroughbred racing fan, and loved the ballet, theater and symphony.
His wife of 67 years, Lois Hertz Lesser, passed away in August, 2016. They raised their family in Fairfield, Connecticut and then had residences in Weston, Connecticut and Long Boat Key, Florida.
Robert is survived by his sister, Sally Ann Shernow, of Meriden, Connecticut; and children Stanton H. Lesser (Jill Kaufman Lesser), James Best (Ellen Siebert Best), Laura Lesser Papageorge (Tony Papageorge) and Andrew Lesser (Judith Hersh Lesser), eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A private funeral was held in Sarasota, Florida. There will be a Memorial Service at Congregation B'nai Israel, 2710 Park Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut on Sunday, April 2 at 10:30 a.m.

He had the unusual gift of looking ahead, possessing great confidence in his
ability to achieve. For example: During WWll he did not wait to be drafted, but
enlisted in Officers Candidate School, thereby obtaining college credits to graduate
from law school in 7 years ( undergraduate through law school).

I feel the loss of my only sibling whom I always admired.
He was a very generous son to his parents for many years.
In my opinion one of the best things he did was to marry Lois.
Robert had the ability and confidence to become very
successful.
He will be very much missed.
sister, Sally A.
