Blue Hill

Edward Lawler Johnson, Jr., 89, formerly of West Hartford CT and Boca Grande FL, died January 13, 2026, at home in Blue Hill, Maine. He was born in Hartford, CT on October 6, 1936, son of Edward L. Johnson and Marion Riordan Johnson. Ted graduated from Portsmouth Priory (Abbey) School in 1954, spent two years in the army, stationed in Germany, and earned a B.A. from Williams College in 1961.

Early in his professional life, Ted worked at the Hartford National Bank, then entered a long career as the Executive Director of the Connecticut Bar Association, retiring in 1998. He and Anne lived for decades in West Hartford, raised three children, played paddle tennis avidly at The Hartford Golf Club, and became part of a loyal pack of life-long friends. Also well-known in the civic life of Blue Hill, he loved (and could spell) the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club, where he served on its council, led the membership committee and organized a wholly successful capital campaign. He was a friend to many in the Blue Hill Country Club and served as a trustee of the town's public library, where he also worked on a successful endowment campaign. He loved days afloat on "Barnacle," and afternoons of golf and tennis. Ted and his wife also greatly appreciated the world travel they were able to enjoy after their children were grown.

Ted is predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Anne Richardson Johnson. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Johnson (Jim Marrs) of West Hartford CT, Mimi Johnson of Bradenton FL, and Laura Hill (Glenn) of Wellesley MA, and by his adored grandchildren, Timothy, Caroline, John and Eliza Hill. He is also survived by his siblings-in-law Frank Richardson (Kimba), Thomas Richardson (Joy), Beth Clements (Robin), Susan Richardson, and John Richardson (Renee) and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother David. His family would like to thank his loyal caregiver, Nordia Rhoden.

A service will be held next summer in Blue Hill, Maine.

Ted and Anne were neighbors and friends from the days we were young couples living in apartments in Simsbury, Ct. Our daughter Jeanne and Betsy Johnson were pals from those early days.

As time passed we all lived in West Hartford where our time together expanded and deepened our friendship over dinners, events and holidays. Hours in one another´s homes, trips near and abroad.

Mostly we remember the unwavering kindness and support from Ted and Anne as life´s challenges tested our family. And shared our joy in the good times.

We will always be grateful Ted and Anne entered our lives more than 65 years ago. Timeless friends.
