Robert Redfearn Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

REDFEARN, Robert ROBERT LEE REDFEARN Robert Lee Redfearn, 90, died on April 6, 2010 after a brief illness. He was born on August 11, 1919 in Moultrie, a fourth-generation Georgian. Mr. Redfearn was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Persian Gulf Command as a Master Sergeant. In 1946, he, along with his brother, began a meat business, Redfern Foods, making and selling sausage from a recipe he learned from his father. The business grew from a modest meat products business into a multi-plant, diversified food organization in Georgia, Florida, New York, and Mississippi. His faith, family, and friends were central to his life. Mr. Redfearn was a charter member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where he and his family worshipped since 1949, and he served as a long-time elder and trustee. He was a man of broad interests. He was instrumental in founding Education for Freedom (now the Southern Council for International Studies), the Chair of Private Enterprise at Georgia State University, and chairman of The Loose Group, a group of 60 community leaders whose combined efforts selectively support candidates for public office. Mr. Redfearn was chairman of the Metropolitan Atlanta Crime Commission during a transformational period in regional law enforcement. He was a trustee at Morris Brown College and Trinity School. He was also a member of The Atlanta Rotary Club and the Breakfast Club. He held numerous Director and Advisory positions for philanthropic, educational, and health institutions. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wilma Horne Redfearn; two daughters, Janie Redfearn Morris and her husband, Marcus R. Morris, of Cohutta, GA, and Roslyn Redfearn Gregory and her husband, James C. Gregory of Plano, TX. Also surviving him are five grandchildren, James C. Gregory IV, Robert Redfearn Gregory, Lee Anne Gregory, Marcus Cole Morris, and Eden Elizabeth Morris. He also leaves a large extended family for whom he had great affection. Private burial services will be held at Arlington Memorial Park. A celebration of his life and memorial service will be held Friday, April 9 at 2 o'clock at Trinity Presbyterian Church with a reception following in Williams Hall. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Trinity Presbyterian Church. H. M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill, 4550 Peachtree Rd. Atlanta, GA 30319.

Robert was a class individual and a strong believer in family. I authored a book on our Redfearn family in 2005 and he spent a great deal of his personal time assisting me in the preparation of this work. I will miss having the wonderful conversations that i had with him.

Mr. Redfearn was one of the most honorable, nicest and most gracious Southern gentlement I have ever met. I truly enjoyed working with him and getting to know him over the past five years. I will miss him and know that his family will too. However, I know that he lived a wonderful and full life and is in a better place.
