Robert "Bob" David Schreck III
May 16, 1944 - February 14, 2026
Robert "Bob" David Schreck III entered his heavenly home on February 14, 2026. Born May 16, 1944, in Staten Island, NY, and growing up in Westfield, NJ, he enjoyed summer league swimming and diving, singing in the men and boys' choir, and serving as an altar boy at the Episcopal Church. He excelled as a swimmer and diver at Westfield High. He became a proud Virginian at the University of Virginia, where he captained the swim and dive team and met his wife, Barrie, on a blind date at Mary Baldwin College.
Upon graduating from UVA's McIntire School of Commerce in 1965, Bob was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He proudly served his country for five years, including a thirteen-month tour in Vietnam, before he and Barrie were stationed at the Landing Force Training Command in Coronado, CA, where he earned the rank of Captain. After concluding his service, they returned to her hometown of Richmond, VA, where Bob began his career as an agent with John Hancock.
Deeply committed to youth sports and activities while his children grew, Bob devoted countless hours to the Woodmont summer swim team and to U.S. Swimming as an official, club representative, and longtime president of the James River Aquatic Club. He passed his love of swimming on to his children and grandchildren, cheering on their success from the side of the pool to this day.
In 1984, he left John Hancock and founded Victory Trophy and Awards, which he grew with pride until his retirement in 2019. Generations of professionals and Richmond area swimmers-including many UVA swimmers and divers-received awards crafted by his hands. And if you happened to stop by the shop, you were certain to enjoy a lengthy and thoughtful conversation.
Bob found his greatest joy at the family's river retreat in Coles Point, where he spent nearly every weekend since the 1990s caring for the property and for weeks in the summer watching his children and grandchildren grow up together with their cousins by the water. He lived by the motto, "Once a Marine, always a Marine," carrying that discipline and pride throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert David Schreck Jr. and Shirley Mason Landgraff Schreck, and his in-laws, John Harvie Martin Jr. and Evelyn Bruce Martin. He is survived by his wife, Barrie; his son, David (Jennifer), and their children Robert, Xander, and Hayley; his daughter, Shannon, and her children, Blake, Blair, and Kendall, along with their father, Todd Young; his sister, Susan Frazier her two children, Laura and Adam; Barrie's sisters, Ann (Bill) Crowe and Dare (Charlie) Shreve, and brother, Harvie Martin; and many beloved members of their extended family.
We are so grateful for the medical care he received from Johnston Willis Hospital Neuroscience and the support and guidance we received from James River Hospice.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 22nd, at Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd, Midlothian, VA 23113. A private service with military honors will be held for the family at Amelia Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the
Wounded Warrior Project or Tunnel to Towers.
