Professor Sherk had a very significant influence on my life, both as a mentor during my Ph.D. work in Classics and as someone whose conversation I always enjoyed. All who work in the discipline of Greek and Latin epigraphy have come to appreciate the lasting importance of his work. He was a fine scholar and a fine man.
