Bob Sherk represented the best of his generation. His military service was exemplary. He was a highly productive scholar, who distinguished himself in one of the most demanding areas of our discipline. I always found him a thoughtful, modest colleague

Professor Sherk had a very significant influence on my life, both as a mentor during my Ph.D. work in Classics and as someone whose conversation I always enjoyed. All who work in the discipline of Greek and Latin epigraphy have come to appreciate the lasting importance of his work. He was a fine scholar and a fine man.
