Robert Staab Obituary

Old Lyme - Dr. Robert James Staab, 71, of Old Lyme, passed away July 29, 2022, surrounded by family. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, at Christ the King Church in Old Lyme, followed by a reception.

Known affectionately as "Dr. Bob," he was born in Roselle, N.J., Sept. 18, 1950. He married his high school sweetheart, Susan Hornyak July 29, 1972. They were married for exactly 50 years to the day and had four children together.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Robert (Kathleen), Katherine, Christopher (Erin), and Stephanie; his grandchildren: James, Sean, Jackson, Ronan and Cooper; as well as his siblings: Ed, John, Tom and Donna: and numerous nieces and nephews.

He earned graduate degrees from St. John University and Fairleigh Dickinson University, as well as a bachelor's degree in biology from his beloved alma mater, Boston College. His profession was his true calling in life. He founded his own company, Regulatory and Technical Associates (RTA), and worked as a regulatory consultant to many pharmaceutical, medical device, cosmetic, food, and chemical companies. He had several patents in the field of drug delivery and chaired three investigational review boards, including most notably, the Allendale Investigational Review Board (AIRB) since 1990. He rarely took a day off and was notorious for going on vacation with a printer and a ream of paper in his suitcase. He often remarked that he would work until the day he died, a promise he kept, bringing his laptop to the hospital, and answering emails from there. His clients and colleagues will remember him as endlessly devoted to their projects.

The other great passion of his life was his faith. A devout Catholic, he attended Mass daily, and volunteered with many ministries over the years including the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). He was invested as a Knight of Malta in 2010, and served the organization proudly with his wife.

He was an excellent chef who enjoyed making elaborate meals for the people he loved. His home was always open to everyone: family, friends and friends of friends. An uncompromising man, he had a great sense of humor and a few surprising soft spots. In particular - dogs, the Sea Scouts (a young person's maritime association), vanilla ice cream with a chocolate bonnet on top and his pet turtles and exotic fish. He could be found cruising the Connecticut River in his 1966 Bertram Moppie "Blue Chip" from April to November. He enjoyed swimming, or rather floating, in the pool with a drink in his hand.

"Ever to Excel."

Dear Sue and family, I just now learned of Bob's passing and want to convey my deepest sympathies and thoughts to everyone. I know you all take comfort in having seen the immense joy, laughter and happiness he brought to all of us for so long. I am honored to remember our days at BC, being roommates, playing on the lacrosse team and even his special little Patrick. Having been a member of his wedding party (on my birthday) is an event I still recall with special fondness, affection and devotion for a once in a lifetime friend.
I can think of no better quote than that of the Bengali poet, Rabindranath Tagore: "Death is not extinguishing the light, it is putting out the lamp because a new dawn has come."

Although I never knew Dr. Bob, I was intrigued by his love of life and in particular his involvement with the Sea Scoutsm, a program of the Boy Scouts of America. I also enjoyed reading about cruising on his Bertram Moppie, a classic.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear husband. Bob was such a kind, caring and generous man who will be missed not only by his family, but by all who knew him. John and Bob became Knights of Malta at about the same time and John expressed to me that Bob was an exceptional human being. I went through the loss of my husband 3 yrs ago but the love and wonderful memories help you to go on. I believe that john and Bob are with us always, but in a very different way. May God give you and your family the strength to deal with this great loss. I am not able to attend Bob's services on Thursday because we will be in Massachusetts for the funeral Mass of a very dear friend who died of cancer at 55 yrs old. May god bless you and your family.

Dear Susan and family, I was so very sorry to hear of the passing of your beloved husband. Bob was such a wonderful, caring and generous man who made his life an inspiration for all. Bob and John became Knights of Malta at around the same time and John was always so impressed about the exceptional man that Bob was. His passing is not only a tremendous loss to you and your family, but the world was a better place with him in it. I went through a similar loss 3 yrs ago when John passed, but I do believe that he and Bob will always be with us in a different way. May our prayers and your wonderful memories be a consolation to you and your family. I will not be able to attend the service for Bob because I will be in Massachusetts with my family, attending a funeral Mass for a dear friend who passed away from cancer at 55 yrs old. God bless you and your family.

Bob was so good and generous to Sr. Concetta and to us. Every Christmas Bob and Susan sent tickets to the Theater Playhouse for us followed by Red Lobster Restaurant afterwards. Sr. Concetta would beam with joy talking about it. That´s only one example of many, many gifts Bob and Susan would do for their Aunt. Loved his joy and laughter when he came to visit!
