Robert Westphal Obituary

Robert F. Westphal

AGE: 92 • Lakewood

Robert F. Westphal, 92, of Lakewood, NJ, beloved husband of Edith (Terhune) Westphal for 67 years, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2015 surrounded by the ones he laughed with, lived for and loved. He was predeceased by his sister Jeanette Glibert, as well as his parents Herman and Mabel Westphal. Besides his wife Edith, Robert is survived by his son Robert S. Westphal and his wife Martha of Marlboro and his two daughters Susan Nordyk and Lorraine Stone of Howell. He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Jennifer, Robert, Kaylee, Krista, Heather and Autumn; and great grandchildren Gianna, Ethan and Rielle. Robert was born in Jersey City. He served in the 89th Infantry division during World War II as a First Sergeant and participated in the Rhine Crossing, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. He worked for Bendix as a contract administrator for 32 years and spent his retirement years traveling the globe with his wife. Robert's sense of humor is fondly remembered by his children and endeared him to all. We thank God for the gift of his life and the blessing of the time we spent with him. Arrangements are under the direction of D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.

To the Westphal family,
Besides the obvious good looks I know the family as smart and friendly. As a teenager when I'd visit we'd talk sports and music. To my surprise we enjoyed some of the same bands.
Now having met all but one of the children (a new born), grandchildren and great grandchildren I'm confident the family characteristics will long carry on after the loss of your father, grandfather and great grandfather..
Sincerely, Robert Mulhaul

Grandpa,

There aren't enough words to describe how truly missed you will be & just how much you are loved.

You lived such a beautiful life. A life that so many dream of. You are the true definition of "living the dream." You are such a wonderful role model for your family, in more ways than one.

It pains me that you aren't here with us anymore but we will meet again. Your name & memory will live with this family forever. Your sense of humor and love for your family will never be forgotten.

I love you so very much & miss you every single day.

Forever in my heart & always on my mind.

I have great respect and honor for your father, for he and his generation were true men of men! They made great sacrifices for us and this country so that we could have what we have today.

The national average for World War II veterans that pass away is 492 per day. This month, we lost a true husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and combat veteran of World War II. He never spoke of it, but he and God know what few know and will ever know of the true experiences of war.

On March 14th, it will be a true honor to salute the flag and say thank you and God bless, for even though our age difference, there is an unspoken bond between soldiers.

To Susan, the girls, and family,

I am deeply sorry to hear about the loss of a beloved father, grandfather, and husband. I was unable to have the opportunity to meet him but I have heard many stories of the amazing man he was. He has definitely left an imprint on my life as well as his entire family. May he lay in everlasting peace <3

To the worlds best grandpa, thank you for being a huge role model in my life. You always knew how to light up a room, you had the best sense of humor. Our birthday wont ever be the same again, we wont be able to take our traditional birthday photo anymore. Although this has not been easy, for any of us, I am so thankful I got to spend 24 birthdays with you. I am happy I got to see you almost every Sunday growing up, you would sit with the cats & watch football for hours. I am happy I got to hold your hand just a few weeks ago, and you squeezed my hand so tight, you knew I was there with you. I love you so very much, I promise to take care of Grandma as much as I can. I know you are right here with me always.

PS - I got a flat tire the other day, I just had to laugh, I think you are trying to tell me you want your Buick back.

Dear Bob and Family,
Your father's soft smile and twinkling eyes seem to reflect the love and happiness he gave and received from family and friends. Prayers and deepest sympathy to your mother, his beloved wife; to you, your sisters and spouses; to his grandchildren; and to other family members and friends who delighted in his presence.

I cannot think about Uncle Bob without choking up at the thought that he is gone. I know you are all hurting right now and you will always miss this sweet, gentle man. I loved seeing all your pictures, and I kept thinking he lived a wonderful life. Sending you much love, Cheryl and Joe
