Rodney Roach Obituary

Rodney Lane Roach

STONEWALL, LA - Services honoring the life of Rodney Lane Roach, 52, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 9, 2012, at Summer Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Rod Mastellar officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park.

Rodney was born September 1, 1959, in Shreveport, to James Harold and Gwendolyn Taylor Roach and went home to be with the Lord on August 6, 2012. He was a faithful member of Summer Grove Baptist Church. Rodney was a devoted husband and father. He was proud of his children, adored his grandchildren, and loved his wife dearly. Rodney grew up in Summer Grove and graduated from Southwood High School. He joined the Shreveport Fire Department in September 1978. Most of his time on the fire department was at Station #17 in Summer Grove. He loved the men he worked with and the people he served. Rodney made friends with everyone he met and was always fun to be around. He was a great story teller and had countless stories of experiences working as a fireman. Before joining the fire department he went to Oklahoma Horseshoeing School and shod horses as a side job. In 1987 he built Double R Arena in Stonewall. He began having weekly rodeos in the spring of 1988, and they continued year round for 22 years. He loved participating in team roping and bucking bulls. Many times he put on benefit bull ridings and rodeos to raise money to help people with special needs. He moved his family from Shreveport to Stonewall (God's country) in 2000 and began raising cattle and baling hay. In October 2007, he retired from the fire department with 29 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving him is his wife of 33 years, Becky; son, Dusty and Nicole; daughter, Katie Pearson and David; son, Taylor and Jennifer; grandchildren, Ben, Libbie, and Charlie; brother, James Roach, Jr. and Dinah; sister, Beth Childs and Jay; aunt, Elaine Talbert; "kinda" sister, Ruthie Dunn and Joe; mother and father-in-law, Barbara and Madison Box; sister-in-law, Lisa Box; many special cousins, aunts, nieces, and nephews.

Special thanks to Drs. Anil Veluvolu, Michael Durci, Reid Grimes, Randy Del Mundo, Lillian Nelson, and Richard Kamm, Willis Knighton Hospice, especially Stephanie, and all the many therapists and nurses from Life Care and Willis Knighton North Rehab that have worked with Rodney over the past 4 years.

Pallbearers will be Steve Chandler, Leland McNabb, Sammy Deeds, Robert Scogin, Carl Davis, Don Holtzclaw, Tommy Benton, and Scott McGee. Honorary pallbearers will be retired and active members of the Shreveport Fire Department.

Rodney helped so many children reach their dreams of rodeoing at Double R arena. My family spent countless weekends there and were blessed in knowing him. My daughter has so many wonderful memories of the time spent with Rodney and the rest of the family. When I think of him I can see that big smile, remember the slow southern drawl and appreciate so much how he always made us feel so welcome. I am praying that Becky, Katie, Dusty and Taylor will feel God's presence during this sad time and will be comforted. Love and prayers, Nelda Durante and family

I am so sorry for your loss.Rodney was a great person to know and I was proud to be his friend. The best jobs I had announcing rodeos were the times I got to announce at Double R. They were always fun. I can still see Rodney looking up at me before the rodeo and giving me that grin and saying,"If I'd known you were coming, I would have cleaned out that dirty old stand." We both started to laugh. I will pray for all of you as you go through this tough time. I guess God need a cowboy.

My first "boyfriend", the one Becky Sue stole away from me. I'm sure glad she did!! What a great life they've had together. I was only about 8 years old, but the memories that I have of both of them will forever be a part of me. I can't believe he is gone. I wish more than anything that I had kept in touch. However, I will never forget the many times he came to shoe Pappy's horses (Mr. Barton) and the times Rodney and Becky Sue took me "out" with them. My heart is very heavy after hearing of this. But no one can take my memories. Much love to the whole Roach family!

When I was a young boy growing up in Briarcliff, on occasion Rod would hook up Star to a wagon and take us kids for a ride. Later, when I got older, he let me go with him to shoe horses and take care of the barn when he was out of town. Memories are said to be 'the sweet paradise of the mind.' I am thankful that I have many of Rod growing up in south Shreveport. May he rest and peace and rise in glory! Our prayers and thoughts are with Becky and family. Memory Eternal, Rod.
