Ronald Horton Obituary
Greenville - Dr. Ronald "Ron" Arthur Horton, 82, died in his home on June 2, 2019 in Greenville, SC.
He taught Literature, Philosophy, and Writing at Bob Jones University for 59 years.
Dr. Horton is survived by three daughters: Jennifer (Ted) Miller of Greenville; Jocelyn (Dennis) Rafaill of Gross Pointe, Michigan; and Jessica (Bevan) Elliott of Greenville; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha Dillard Horton; his parents, Wallace and Jessie Horton; a granddaughter, Catherine Miller; a sister, Carol Brenneman; and a twin brother, Donald Horton.

Friends may visit the family from 6-8:00 PM Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Mackey Funerals and Cremations Century Drive. The funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, June 6, 2019 in War Memorial Chapel on the campus of Bob Jones University, with burial service immediately following at Graceland East Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held later at Dr. Horton's church, Trinity Baptist Church in Gaffney, where he faithfully taught and served for 32 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, 907 E. Oneal St., Gaffney, SC 29340, www.tbcgaffney.org. Arrangements by Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Century Drive.

Ron Horton was and is a godly man. We rode to California and back after my graduation. He helped my teaching English with ideas to make it simple. The summer with the Hortons in California was an unforgettable experience.

Dr. Ron was the only adult in my life who ever had a vision for my future. He believed I could take the classes needed for a doctorate in English from Oxford, and that I could do that because he had the connections. No, i didn't get that doctorate, though I wish I had! But the fact that he believed in me that much caused me to have confidence as a writer and editor for many years. Rest in peace, sir; rise in glory.

He and his brother were two of the most practical "down to earth" people I have ever know. The depth and expanse of Ron's intellect was remarkable, but he treated everyone with respect and dignity. He was a true gentleman!

I traveled to California with Ron and his brother Don in 1961. We had lived on the grad hall. We had a wonderful summer of fun and godly growth. We attended his father's weekly Bible study. He helped me learn how to teach English to students who had struggled. Here was and is a brilliant godly man who is to be loved and appreciated greatly.

Once I remember when Dr. Ron Horton was discussing which courses I should take, he suggested Shakespeare. I explained that I had already taken Shakespeare at another college. I further added that I had read all of his plays. He asked: Timon of Athens? I replied, bitter old man. That answer satisfied him. In the literary sense, Dr. Horton was an expert on tragedies. Yet in the literal sense, his life has been anything but a tragedy. Our loss is greater than his. He is with his Redeemer.
