Mr. Rufus Junior Whitfield, affectionately known as “DJ-X”, departed this life suddenly on Saturday, July 28, 2018. Rufus was born May 14, 1959 at MCV Hospital in Richmond, VA. He was educated in the Emporia Public School System.
Rufus was employed at James River Detention Center in Henrico-Goochland, VA, where he worked faithfully for sixteen years. He enjoyed DJing and audio technology. Rufus served as President of the Virginia Gospel Announcers Guild, Richmond Chapter of Gospel Music Workshop of America, Inc. He also was the first Disc Jockey on the Board of Virginia Announcers Guild (State and National level).
Rufus leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife, Kimberly Hughes-Whitfield (they celebrated their 12th anniversary on June 13, 2018); eight children, Pamela Whitfield, Whitley Whitfield, Jasmine Whitfield and Rhiana Whitfield all of Pennsylvania, Dawnikquie Jones of Spotsylvania, VA, Rufus Tuell (Sharika), Andre Whitfield and Alonzo Forbes all of Richmond, VA; two stepsons, Dontay Garrison and Montrel Garrison both of Richmond, VA; god-son, Kenneth Taylor of Richmond, VA; twenty-one grandchildren; two sisters, Ramona Sober (Al) of Stockbridge, GA, and Emma Whitfield of Philadelphia, PA; four brothers, Jeffrey Letsinger (Marie) of Jacksonville, FL, Ernest Letsinger (Sonya) of Peekskill, NY, James Letsinger of Vancouver, WA, and Christopher Letsinger of Columbia, SC; aunt, Vinnia Mae Darden of Philadelphia, PA; uncle, Robert Whitfield of Philadelphia, PA; father-in-law, Andrew J. Hughes (Yvonne); brothers-in-law, Andrew Hughes (Sonya) of Florence, South Carolina, Linwood Hughes (Collette) of Bowie, Maryland; Jonathan Daniels (Cassandra) of King William County, Virginia; a very close and special friend, Ryan Stevens of Richmond, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends too numerous to name.
Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Trinity Baptist Church, 2811 Fendall Avenue, Richmond, VA, the Rev. Dr. A. Lincoln James, Jr., Pastor, officiating and Bishop Lawrence Taylor, eulogist. The interment to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond, VA.
Viewing for Mr. Whitfield will be held from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Friday, August 3, 2018 at the church and 2 hours prior to the funeral service at the church.
Family visitation/wake will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Friday, August 3, 2018 at the church.
The family and friends are asked to assemble 12:30 P.M. the day of the service at the church.
