My deepest sympathies to the family of Dr. Curtis or Russ as I came to know him in more recent years. I met Dr. Curtis in the Department of Sociology in 1983 when I was 19 and he gave me a Leo Buscaglia book for my 20th birthday (I still have it.) He attended my graduation party in 1987. We occasionally talked on the phone during the 20 years I spent in Tokyo and, when I returned to Houston and UH for a visit in 2003, I popped into his corner office to say hello and we walked to the UC...

Dr. Curtis was a great inspiration to me. I attended the U of H and with his encouragement and his guidance, I graduated in 1991. His humble beginnings rang true within his intellect; you don't have to be wealthy to be smart and because you have means doesn't indicate that you are lazy.

I graduated as a non traditional student in 1991 and reached out to him in 2008......he remembered me. I am blessed to have encountered him and his guidance in the area of social movement.
