My deepest sympathies to the family of Dr. Curtis or Russ as I came to know him in more recent years. I met Dr. Curtis in the Department of Sociology in 1983 when I was 19 and he gave me a Leo Buscaglia book for my 20th birthday (I still have it.) He attended my graduation party in 1987. We occasionally talked on the phone during the 20 years I spent in Tokyo and, when I returned to Houston and UH for a visit in 2003, I popped into his corner office to say hello and we walked to the UC together and had lunch. We managed to check in on each other throughout the years by phone; the last time, I believe, was right after Hurricane Harvey. I consistently saw in Russ a determined man of principal with a rare intellect and a refreshing, humble disposition and mindful awareness of what it means to be human. I consider him a mentor and the memories of his support and encouragement will always live in my heart. In our last phone conversations, he talked happily and serenely about his beautiful children and grandchildren and his love and pride for them. I am grateful for having known Dr. Russell Curtis and for the positive effect he had on my life. My deepest condolences to you all.

Dr. Curtis was a great inspiration to me. I attended the U of H and with his encouragement and his guidance, I graduated in 1991. His humble beginnings rang true within his intellect; you don't have to be wealthy to be smart and because you have means doesn't indicate that you are lazy.
I graduated as a non traditional student in 1991 and reached out to him in 2008......he remembered me. I am blessed to have encountered him and his guidance in the area of social movement.
May God bless you, his family and friends. He is loved.
