It is with profound sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved sister, Ruth Elizabeth Oates, at her residence in Groton, CT on Saturday, July 10, 2021. She recently celebrated her 58th birthday.

Ruth was preceded in death by her late parents, Norman and Hannah Oates and her older sister, Nancy Oates Darnell.

Ruth grew up in Mystic, CT surrounded by her large loving family of five brothers and two sisters.  She enjoyed watching and participating in many sports but her favorite was baseball.  When her health permitted, she competed in the Special Olympics were she excelled and was very proud of her winning medallion collection.

Ruth Oates is survived by her siblings, Norman Oates, Vernon, CT; William “Bill” Oates and his wife Nancy, Encinitas, CA; Phillip “Phil” Oates, Wyoming, Rhode Island; John Oates  Griswold, CT; Christian “Chris” Oates, Mystic, CT;  and Sandra Graziano Oates, Winter Park, FL as well as and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family wishes to express our sincere gratitude for the kindness Ruth received from her many caregivers over the years. We acknowledge, and are grateful for, the compassionate care they provided.

A graveside memorial service will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, July 19 at Ledyard Union Cemetery (Section: Quakertown 2) located at Colonel Ledyard Highway, Ledyard, CT 06339 where Ruth will be laid to rest next to our dearest mother, Hannah M. Sandra, My Condolences to you and your Family. My Prayers for all of You.

I love and cared for Ruth Oates. She inspired me to quite smoking. The memories I have with her will forever be in my heart. It was a pleasure spending time with her. She had such an amazing spirit and a smile that would light up the room. Ruth you will forever be missed but never forgotten.

Thanks to all for the kind words and memories of Ruth. Team Oates has lost another player. Heart delivered thank you to all her caretakers including those in our family—looking at you John & Sandra. Ruth, stay in the bleachers, love brother #3

Sending my condolences to Ruth’s family. I have fond of the Oates family

I was sad to learn of Ruth’s passing. The last time I saw Ruth was at Nancy’s service. Hannah and Norman are rejoicing to be reunited with their beloved daughter. A loss for the family here but the heavens just got an angel. Love to all. Marian Buchanan

I am so sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences.

I will always remember taking Ruth to a Red Sox vs Yankees game at Fenway Park right before the playoffs started. We sat in the bleachers and ate nachos and cheered as loud as we could for the Red Sox. The Boston sports world lost one of it's biggest fans...I'll miss you Ru-Ru.

I loved caring for REO. So many fond and fun memories. We shared the love of sports among other things. Boston sports of any kind except the Patriots lol. Her laugh was infectious and when she was in a laughing mood everyone one was too. She will be greatly missed. Rest in peace always.

I am so very saddened by Ruth's passing. She was a long time member of our Journey Found family. It was our privilege to care for her and we will miss her greatly.
