Sam Whitaker Obituary

Floyd "Sam" Whitaker, retired university comptroller at the College of William & Mary, died April 22 at the age of 85.
"Mr. Whitaker was respected by his peers in Virginia and among college staff for his leadership in developing sound financial procedures and practices for the college," Michael R. Halleran, W&M provost, said in a faculty notice.
In 1959 he became assistant treasurer and internal auditor at the college. He rose to treasurer in 1969 and comptroller in 1981.
Ray Adams succeeded him as assistant treasurer 42 years ago. "Sam Whitaker was one of the finest men I have ever met," he said. "He was a certified Kentucky colonel and a true Southern gentlemen. It has been my very good fortune to have known him all these years."
Earlier, Mr. Whitaker served on the staff of the auditor of Public Accounts for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Sam Whitaker was born in Maysville, Ky., and served in the Army during World War II.
He was active with Williamsburg United Methodist Church and Williamsburg Kiwanis. He rose to governor of the Kiwanis Capital District, which includes Delaware, Maryland and Washington. He was on the first board of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg Foundation and served as president.
Fellow Kiwanian Gary Ripple recalled, "Sam was a man who lived every day with dignity and veracity. He epitomized everything we love and respect in a Kiwanian."
He served on the James City County Planning Commission and the board of Williamsburg Regional Library.
Mr. Whitaker was a loving, caring, and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of over 61 years, Frances Whitaker; daughter, Peggy Whitaker-Manger; grandchildren Melissa and Katie; and great-grandchildren Tiante and Jaikobie. It's not goodbye, it's just until we meet again.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Bertha Whitaker, four sisters, and one brother.
Services and interment were held Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kiwanis Foundation, P.O. Box 1265, Williamsburg VA 23187; or Williamsburg United Methodist Church Building Fund, 500 Jamestown Rd., Williamsburg VA 23185; or to a charity of one's choice.
