Dr. Samuel Fineberg

Fineberg, Dr. Samuel, 96, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2009. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, "Sam" lived in Portland, ME, until he retired to Sunrise; FL, in 1988. Sam was a fifty year member of the Maine Optometric Association and had his optometry offices in Portland, Cornish and Kezar Falls, ME. During World War II, he served in Patton's Third Army and held the rank of Tech Sergeant. Sam was something of a musical prodigy. He played the marimba at age 12 with the Portland Symphony, and was a regular member by age 15. He played percussion professionally for many years, and was active with Chandler's Band throughout his lifetime. Sam was known as a very good ambidextrous handball player, and enjoyed his daily games at the YMCA. A 1930 graduate of Portland High School, he obtained his degree as a Doctor of Optometry from the Massachusetts School of Optometry in 1937. Sam is predeceased by his wife Lillian; and survived by his brother Louis Fineberg of Pine Point, ME; his sisters, Rose Berlowitz of Orlando, FL, and Alice Winer of Davie, FL; his daughter Gail Hyman and son-in-law Barry Hyman of Coventry, CT; his son Robert Fineberg and daughter-in-law Ginny Fineberg of Cape May Court House, NJ, granddaughters, Lisa Pappajohn and Cindy Fineberg; grandson Dan Fineberg; and great-granddaughter Lilly Poppajohn; and many dear nieces and nephews. Interment was made at Temple Beth El Memorial Gardens in Davie, FL. Donations may be made to Camp Dream Catcher, 617 W. South St., Kennett Square, PA 19346.
