Sheila Baer Obituary

On Monday, July 19, 2021, Sheila Baer, loving wife and mother, passed away at the age of 66.

Sheila was born in 1955 in New Haven, CT, to Lt. Colonel Arthur and Margaret McCabe. In 1997 she married James Baer. After graduating with her Doctor of Philosophy from Marquette University she devoted herself to supporting our country's Veterans in her practice as a Clinical Psychologist for the Veteran's Administration, and as a much-respected member of the Illinois State Board of Psychology.

Sheila was known for her sense of humor. Those who knew her also know that tradition was everything to Sheila. She loved to read, spent hours designing and caring for her perfect English Cottage Garden, was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage, and invested countless hours researching and recording her family's history. Sheila held a special fondness for all things "Cape Cod", and found great comfort being near the water.

Sheila is survived by her husband Jim, daughter Tracey and son Shane, grandsons Tommy and William, and sister Kathy.

Visitation will be held on Saturday July 31 from 11am to 1pm at Marsh Funeral Home 305 N. Cemetery Rd, Gurnee, IL 60031.

Sheila was a colleague at Hines VA, but long before that she was a very good friend. She and I met working to help provide Veterans with the best care available, a charge she took very seriously, and a window into what a wonderful human being we have lost. Sheila was a rare person, one who stuck to her guns, and would let you know what she thinks, but never in a mean way. I am very grateful to have known such a wonderful human being, who wanted the best for others and was such a good friend. You are missed Sheila, and will never be forgotten.

I also knew Sheila as a colleague and member of the Illinois State Psychology Licensing and Disciplinary Board. Sheila held enthusiastic and ethical perspective to the issues we addressed. I fondly recall walking to Union Station after meetings, sharing stories of her family. Sheila will be missed by our professional community and all who knew her.

I knew Sheila when she was a doctoral intern, a staff member and colleague and when she was a fellow member of the Illinois State Psychology Licensing and Disciplinary Board.
In each of these capacities she consistently demonstrated her high intellect, her outstanding clinical judgment and skills, and her sincere dedication to the tasks she undertook.
I will miss her quick wit, her sunny personality and her friendship.
My condolences to Sheila´s family and to all who knew her.
