I want to thank everyone who has written a comment or a note about Shep or to our family, they are all really appreciated.
We are all going to miss him, but it helps that he touched so many people.

My Dad, Sam Hurwitz, was a partner of Joe in the Advance Heel Co. but I met Shep when I bought my first car to take off to college. I have not lived in Maine since 1974 but do remember growing up there fondly. I have been moved by the many stories and details of Shep's life. Sorry I did not know him better. My deepest sympathy is extended to the entire family.

My condolences go out to the entire Lee family. I fondly remember my few years working at the Westbrook location. I'd see Shep occasionally and he always would say hello and give me a kind smile. He will be missed.

Maine has lost one of its greatest citizens but Shep's values, curiosity, generosity and extraordinary respect for humankind carry on in Shep's children, Jon, Cathy, Beth and Adam. Shep has been a wonderful role model for us all. Thank you, Shep for all that you gave of yourself.

I was sad when I read the newspaper with the announcement that we had lost Shep. He was a great man for our community, doing much and even more that people never heard about. Museum L-A had wanted to do his oral history to try and preserve all the knowledge of the community he had in his head and heart. Sadly, we lost him before, but wish to send Adam and family our sincerest sympathy for their loss. We certainly talk about Shep and use him as an example of commitment to community here at...
