Sonya Shapiro Obituary

Shapiro, Dr. Sonya

After a long and courageous, six-year battle with cancer Dr. Sonya Shapiro passed away on May 19, 2014, two days after her 87th birthday at the Joe Raso Hospice.

Dr. Shapiro was born in New York City to Maritime Service Captain Theodore I. Feinne and Bernice Feinne, who started the first interracial day care center in New York City during World War II, which is still flourishing.

A distinguished educator and a community activist, Dr. Shapiro was passionate about helping people achieve their maximum capability. She believed that no matter what your background, a good education is a ticket to successful life. Dr. Shapiro received her BA and MA from New York University, and earned her Ed.D from Columbia University's Teacher's College.

Dr. Shapiro started her career as a special education teacher in the New York City school system. As a young mother, she helped establish the pre-school PTA and was deeply involved in the East Ramapo school system where she worked relentlessly to help pass school budgets and bond issues. She was active in PTA for many years.

Dr. Shapiro was an Associate Dean of Pace University, and subsequently, was professor and Dean at City University in New York City. From 1992 to 2000, she was Director of Adult Education Services for Rockland County BOCES. For the past 14 years, she served on the Rockland Community College Board of Trustees. In 2008, she was honored as "Person of the Year" by the Rockland Community College Foundation.

As a community activist, Dr. Shapiro was dedicated to the work of the League of Women Voters of Rockland County and was a life member of the NAACP. She served on the Board of the Friends of the Finkelstein Memorial Library. She received numerous commendations and honors for her community service, including awards from the Rockland County Holocaust Center and Planned Parenthood.

Dr. Shapiro is survived by her beloved husband Milton. She and her husband Milton, had a 66 year love affair. She always said her life didn't begin until she met him. She is also survived by her loving daughter Susan and son-in-law Santi, and her two precious grandchildren Ana and Rio.
