Sophia Dohm Obituary

Sophia Mavris Dohm July 1, 1950 - January 16, 2007 Sophie passed away at her home in Novato on Tuesday, January 16th, 2007, with her husband, Eric and son, Adam by her side. She battled a neuro-degenerative condition, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), for eleven years and succumbed to complications of the disease. Sophie was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the youngest of four children. In 1973, she moved to California with friends and met her husband of 32 years shortly thereafter. They moved to Novato in 1976 where their son was born and raised. As a couple, and later as a family, they had many wonderful adventures and enjoyed camping, sailing, skiing, hiking and scuba diving. She was very active in helping out in the schools and in children's sports activities until her condition made it impossible. Sophie developed a passion for her Greek heritage and enjoyed researching her genealogy and visiting her family's ancestral lands. Later, she became very involved in finding out more about MSA and participated in support groups, public awareness, fundraising, case studies, and a documentary film. What really made Sophie special was that she was a caring and understanding friend -- a compassionate listener to whom people could open up. Her charm, spirit for life, and loving presence touched everyone who knew her. She will be missed by all. Sophia is survived by her husband and son, her mother Helen Mavris, her sister Virginia Starzak, her brother Tom and his wife Carol Mavris, brother John Mavris, her sister-in-law Deb Dohm and brother-in-law Jim Likowski. Services will be held at the Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church at 1110 Dickson Drive, Ignacio, California at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 24th. Arrangements are entrusted to Keaton's Redwood Chapel of Marin in Novato. Memorial contributions may be made to the SDS/MSA Support Group Inc., P.O. Box 279, Coupland, TX. 78615. www.shy-drager.org.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Hello! I recently learned about Sophie's story through her documentary and was deeply moved beyond words. I was inspired to watch after caring for a client with MSA. There are no words describe watching someone who lived life with purpose and compassion decline right before your eyes. I pray your family is well, and know you have friends in Rhode Island. Sincerely!!!

Dear Eric, Adam, and family,

Words can not express how truly wonderful Sophie was. She was the epitome of what a caring, loving and genuine person should be and lived her life accordingly.

Even throughout her illness, her strength and courage inspired everyone she touched to make the best of the life they are given.

Know that she will always be with you and that she will continue to be an angel as she was here on Earth. She is free now, embracing us all with her warmth and love for all time.

Dear Eric, Adam and Family,

Our sympathies and prayers go out to all of you. Sophie was an angel on earth who touched all those who knew her. I believe now she is at peace, as she is free from the disease that captured her. I know she is happy to be in a place again where she can do what she always loved; to watch over her family. We will remember her as the extraordinarily beautiful person she was. She is now an angel in heaven and she will never leave our hearts.

I went to high school with Sophie, I also had a "crush" on her that she never knew about! She was a real Sweetheart even back in those days. Come graduation time, she joined a program called Vista, a sort of missionary thing I believe, I joined the Marine Corps. I never saw Sophie again, but I did hear about her battle with her illness from a good friend who's cousin married Sophie's brother.
It is great to know that Sophie's outlook on things never changed thru out all those years, she was always that sort of person.
Godspeed and God Bless Sophie.

Eric, Adam, and Family:
Sophie was such a wonderful person, wife, and mother. You have been in our thoughts throughout this long struggle. We wish you strength and peace of mind as you transition to another phase of life.
Remember Sophie like this:

Do not stand by my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush of
Quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand by my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
