Stan Oken Obituary

FRESNO COUNTY, CA – The Central Valley community mourns the passing of Stan Oken, a respected former Fresno County supervisor, accomplished entrepreneur, and beloved coach. Stan passed away peacefully in Clovis, California, surrounded by his family, on February 16, 2026, at the age of 97.

Stan is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy; his three children, Roy, Nancy, and Larry; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, with one more expected soon.

Born on August 14, 1928, Stan Oken dedicated his life to community service, youth development, and creating opportunities for others. His passion for mentoring young people began during his time as a high school and community college coach, where he inspired countless athletes both on and off the field. His influence extended far beyond sports as he became a leader in public service, serving as a Fresno County Supervisor with integrity and vision.

Stan was also a visionary entrepreneur. He founded River Way Ranch Camp, a premier children's summer camp that has provided transformative experiences for generations of young people. Additionally, he established Wonder Valley Resort and Conference Center, renowned for its Outdoor Education Programs, Children's Summer Camps, picturesque Wedding Venue, and Corporate Retreat Center. Under Stan's leadership, these institutions became cornerstones of the community. Now entering its 60th year, River Way Ranch Camp continues to foster lifelong friendships and cherished memories for thousands.

Stan's compassion and commitment to making a difference were evident in his response to personal adversity. After surviving the MGM Grand Hotel fire many years ago, he was inspired to create opportunities for young burn survivors to experience the joy of summer camp. This led to the founding of Champ Camp at Wonder Valley in partnership with the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation. Champ Camp recently celebrated its 40th year of providing support and hope to young burn survivors.

Throughout his lifetime, Stan received numerous accolades recognizing his profound impact on business, community service, and family legacy. Among these honors were the Leon S. Peters Award, Central California Family Business Award, Legacy Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award.

A viewing will be held on March 1, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home located at 836 E Nees Ave., Fresno, CA 93720. A Celebration of Life will follow on April 19, 2026, at Wonder Valley Resort and Conference Center beginning at 11:30 a.m. Friends, family members, and community members are invited to attend this special tribute. Please RSVP by calling (800) 821-2801.

Stan's legacy can also be explored online at www.dignitymemorial.com where friends and loved ones are encouraged to share their condolences, memories, and photos with his family.

Stan Oken's life was defined by leadership, generosity, and an unwavering dedication to youth development. His vision and compassion have left an indelible mark on countless lives. Yesterday

I only knew Stan Oken through Champ Camp in the early 90's (I was a camp counselor). But I remember that he was a caring person. He always took the time to ask you how you were doing and helped make Champ Camp a great experience for both the campers and the counselors.
