He was born February 4, 1934 in Charlotte, VT to Stanley Alfred and Katherine Ross Byington. He graduated from Norwich University in Northfield, VT with high honors. Upon graduation, he served in the Corps of Engineers and was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1968. He received his master's degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University and was a member of Chi Epsilon, the national civil engineering honor society. On October 15, 1960, he married Carol A. Knox in Schenectady, NY.
He and his wife made their home in the Washington D.C. area where he spent the majority of his career working with the Federal Highway Administration, retiring after 33 years of service and as a member of the Senior Executive Service. At his retirement, he was Director, Office of Implementation. He received several honors and awards including the FHWA Distinguished Career Service Award in 1990. Subsequently, he served three years as Vice-President of Transportation Engineering for The Scientex Corporation in Arlington, V A. Earlier in his career, he taught Transportation Engineering at the University of Maryland.
Professionally, Mr. Byington was admired as a fair and gifted administrator who had a strong work
ethic. He never shied away from hard work, and never asked anyone to do anything that he wasn't willing to do himself. Mr. Byington's sense of family extended to his friends and colleagues. He had many interests including, reading, theater, music, and golf. He was avid sports fan, most particularly of the Boston Red Sox despite the fact that they broke his heart every year.
Mr. Byington was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gerald. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his two children, Susan Byington DeNuzzio and Ross A. Byington; his son in-law and daughter in-law, John DeNuzzio and Ellen Seiden Byington; his four grandchildren, Alexander and Julia DeNuzzio, and Zoe and Aaron Byington; his mother in-law, Virginia S. Knox; his two sisters, Alice Lauritsen and Margaret Bouvier; several nephews and nieces, and numerous friends.
A funeral service will be held at Williamsburg United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. on Friday, with a reception to follow at the church. A grave side service will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, at Fairfax Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 514 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185 or to Hospice House, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
