Stanley Gandolfi Obituary

Stanley Joseph Gandolfi, a proud member of the Greatest Generation who served his country with bravery and distinction in both World War II and the Korean War, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on June 13, 2015. He was 90 years old, and a lifelong resident of New Orleans and Metairie. Stanley was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1924, and graduated from St. Aloysius High School. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in the European theater. After the war, he attended LSU while an officer in the Army Reserves and earned a degree in Economics in 1950. After briefly attending Loyola Law School, his Army reserve unit was called to action in Korea in 1951. He earned the rank of Lieutenant, was an infantry platoon commander, and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star among other honors. After returning home, Stanley enjoyed a lengthy and successful professional career with Shell Oil Company, Orleans Parish School Board and Pellerin Milnor Corporation. Finally, he also was proprietor of his own employee relations consulting practice in his retirement. Although Stanley took pride in his military and professional accomplishments, nothing made him prouder – or brought him more joy – than his family. He was married to the true love of his life, the late Glenn Mary Garitty Gandolfi, for 62 wonderful years. Together, they raised eight children, who in turn gave them 27 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. No matter how large their family became, Stanley and Glenn Mary never missed a ball game, dance recital, or graduation. Even in retirement, family always came first. Stanley was a man of deep faith who had an unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church. A member of the Holy Name Society, he rarely missed daily mass, and volunteered countless hours to St. Christopher the Martyr Church and School over the course of several decades. Stanley's service to the Church culminated in his receiving, in May 2010, the St. Louis IX Medallion, given to laity in recognition of dedication and service. It is perhaps fitting that he passed away on the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, as he was especially devoted to the Blessed Mother. In addition to Glenn Mary, Stanley was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Patrick and Anna Gandolfi, and his grandson, Marshall Gandolfi Gottsegen. He is survived by his brother, Patrick Gandolfi (Lois), daughters, Mary Ann Nally (Tom), Laurie Berrigan (Jimmy), Jaimie Majoria (Ryan), Becky Gottsegen (Thomas), and Fran Moran (Bill), and sons Gary (Rose), Tommy (Kay), and Kenny, 11 granddaughters, 16 grandsons, 11 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family extends special gratitude to the staff of Notre Dame Hospice, as well as his caregiver, Demetrius "Nell" Toliver, who gave loving care to him in his final months. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a memorial mass at St. Christopher, 3900 Derbigny St., Metairie, Louisiana, on Friday, June 19, 2015 at 1:00 p.m., with visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. Rosary will be said at 12:30 p.m. There will be a private family interment after the service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Aloysius Century Foundation, St. Michael's School, or Covenant House. To view and sign the Family Guestbook, please visit www.lakelawnmetairie.com
