I grew up in Boston in the 1940s and '50s. I remember Stan (who was going by the show-biz name Stan Shaw) coming out to our school in Jamaica Plain and hosting the "Boston Globe WCOP Quizdown." The program was recorded on a so-called wire recorder and later played over radio station WCOP (then 1150 on the AM dial). The wire recorder was a predecessor of the tape recorder.
