Stephen Anthony Obituary

ANTHONY, Stephen H. Of Wellfleet and Boston MA died at his home in Wellfleet on October 24, 2010, after a year-long struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was 73. Raised in Newton Center, he graduated from Hamilton College and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. Steve worked in real estate at New England Mutual Life Insurance Company for twenty years, and then became a founding partner of Copley Real Estate Advisors, where he remained until his retirement in 1994. The rapid growth and success of Copley, and his genuine fondness and respect for all the people who worked there, was a source of great satisfaction in his life. Steve lived in Wellesley for 27 years, and later had homes in Boston's Back Bay and Wellfleet. He had a very deep commitment to community service and Cape Cod conservation, and was a long time director at many organizations including Hamilton College, the Wellfleet Conservation Trust, The Community Builders, and many more. Steve will be remembered as a caring parent, mentor, and friend, whose conscientiousness was matched by his sense of humor and fun. He leaves Barbara, his wife of fifty years, his daughter Susan of Brooklyn NY, his daughter Emily and her husband David Maymudes of Seattle WA and their two children. He is also survived by brothers J. Danford of Bloomfield CT, Cushman of Yarmouth ME, David Smith of Wayland MA (husband of his late sister Caroline), Barbara's twin brother Dr. Philip Mead of Shelburne VT, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Wellfleet Congregational Church on Saturday, November 6 at 1PM. A reception to remember Steve will be held at the Wellesley College Club on Wednesday, November 10 from 5 to 7:30PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Wellfleet Conservation Trust, PO Box 84, Wellfleet, MA 02667. For online condolences, visit www.nickersonfunerals.com

Steve was a great friend and supporter of the City Mission Society of Boston for many years. He served on our Investment Committee for most of that time through good times and not so good ones. We will all miss his friendship and his sense of humor.
We send our condolences to his family and hope that you can take some solace in all of the lives which he touched.

Dear Barbara and family,
We were sorry to hear of Steve's struggle and passing. We have many happy memories of the home we lived in after you did in Wellesley. The theatre he built and left behind was a source of joy for our children for many years. May he rest in peace and may you all find comfort in your memories.
Fondly, Jeanine and Walter Jackson and family

Dearest Anthony Family,
As you do know, you have been so very, very much in our hearts and prayers over these past, very difficult months. May you find some comfort in knowing that Steve will no longer have to suffer and that we all, so deeply, share in your grief. Wheelock will never be quite the same without Steve's wisdom and generous loyalty in terms of time and treasure to its core mission. As well, at Hamilton College, from which our daughter, Emily, graduated, his legacy will be felt for many, many, many years to come.

We will sorely miss you, Steve!!!

Fondly, Tina and Bill Helm

Barbara and Family,
We were so saddened to hear of your tremendous loss. Know that the community is grieving with you and your family and we will miss Stephen immensely. He always remembered everyones name and asked what had gone on since he had last seen us. I hope to be able to make the memorial on Saturday but do not know if I will be out of work in time. Please accept our condolences.
Fondly,
Kathleen and Alan

Dear Anthony family, Tim and I and Kevin will be especially thanksful this Thanksgiving that we had such a wonderful part of Wellfleet with us for as long as we did. When we first came to Wellfleet to manage the Chequessett Country Club some forty years ago, we started to make so many friends and feel the magic of the seaside community. Steve certainly was the magic for us. We will be saying a prayer for Steve this Thanksgiving and will be thinking of your family as well. Tim, Claire, and Kevin Carroll

To Emily,

Your dad was much too young to die. We are so sorry for this tremendous loss to you and your family. Your dad was such a valuable member of not just this community but to the many organizations and people who benefitted from his generosity and personal contributions. Please convey our condolences to your family.

Dear Mrs. Anthony,
Words cannot express the sadness I feel for you and your family. Mr. Anthony was one of the most kind and considerate people I have ever met. The conversations we had regarding all of your wonderful travels, his work stories and wine tutorials will always be fondly remembered. Never once did he come into the wicked oyster and not ask about myself and my family also. A life well and generously lived will always be remembered in the hearts of everyone he touched.
Love, DJ Conte (the wicked oyster)
