Stephen Coates Obituary

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION -- Stephen A. Coates, 55, formerly of Keene, N.H., and Brattleboro, died at the Veterans' Administration Medical Center in White River Junction on Sunday evening, Aug. 7, 2005, after a long illness.

Mr. Coates was born in Hardwick on Nov. 6, 1949, the son of Arnold and Christina (Gallow) Coates.

He grew up in Hardwick and graduated from high school there. He was a Air Force veteran and served during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Coates was a member of the Keene Fire Department and was sworn in to the Steamer Company in January 1976. He was promoted to the position of permanent firefighter on July 5, 1976, and served with the department until he resigned to pursue other interests in July 1981.

He was known for his artistic ability and was instrumental in designing and lettering the fire alarm boards and lettering of the firefighters' helmets.

He was employed by Brattleboro Haulage up until the time of his illness. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, a former member of the Keene Lodge of Elks and the Loyal Order of Moose. He enjoyed all types of sports.

Survivors include a brother, R. Jeff Coates of Hardwick; his former wife, Valerie Coates of Westmoreland, N.H.; several nieces and nephews, including a nephew, Kory Wesley of Alstead, N.H., and a niece, Kacey Frink of Claremont, N.H.

There are no visiting hours. Services will be private. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans' Administration Medical Center, Patient Activities Fund, 215 North Main St., White River Junction, VT 05009.
