Stephen Rome Obituary

Stephen J. Rome Jr., of Saint Rose, LA, passed away unexpectedly from a traumatic cardiac episode on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at the age of 60. Steve is survived by his beloved wife of 18 years, Carolyn (Ford) Rome, proud mother Socorro (Bourbon) Rome, daughter Kirsten (Hokanson) Rios, and stepson Matthew Sperry. He was a special ""Pepere"" to grandchildren Raya, Benjamin, Rosali and Linnea. Brother to Darlene Boyne (husband Don), Sonia Coppock (husband Curt), Geraldine Airriess (husband Chris); Brother-in-law to Cynthia Ayers (husband Larry), Daniel Ford (wife Theresa), Nancy Heller, Mary Kay Austiff (husband Tim) and Robert Ford. Special uncle to seventeen nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Stephen J. Rome, Sr., and sister Anna Rome. Steve was a life-long Louisianan, born in Vacherie and raised in Metairie. After graduating from Louisiana State University, he was a landscape architect, topping off his career as owner of SJ Rome, LLC. Since the 1990's, his simultaneous career was as a wood craftsman, from woodturning to designing and building custom furniture. His third passion was music, from avid listening to drumming and vocalizing in a band. His grandkids were the light of his life and Pepere will be remembered for his ""silly"" stories, fun games and summer wood projects. He was well known for his quick wit and humor. His skillful hands created wooden treasures from concept to finished works of art. He could ""talk to the animals""; his favorites were his dogs, Chienne and Ellie, and cats Raz and Mia. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, LA, from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. On-line condolences may be posted at www.leitzeaganfuneralhome.com.

Steve was a really good drummer/vocalist/musician and great nice guy to have the pleasure to know from our time playing together. All of the stories from the beautiful service bear out even moreso then I knew. One night at jam we went through the Zep I almost entirely as the others looked on; J Bonham light I used to think! This leaves a huge void in Bandog but he will always be with us in jam room going forward! RIP !

Reading these entries, it's apparent Steve was loved and respected by many. He was such a kind, funny, creative and talented guy, and will be sorely missed by his family and many friends. I remember fun times visiting Memere and Pepere in the country and playing with all our cousins. What a terrible loss.
I'm traveling back to Texas today from CA, and am so sorry to miss this celebration of his life.

We were so sorry to hear about Steve's passing. We always have enjoyed seeing you both and were so happy that it was not long ago when we got to speak with you both. We were talking to you about the music during cruising the coast. We were also impressed by his craftsmanship with wood. We know he will be missed by so many friends and family. Prayers to the entire Rome family for peace and comfort.

To the entire Rome Family. I have had the pleasure of working with Steve on many projects that he designed as a the Landscape Architect. He was very talented and well respected throughout the New Orleans area. We later learned that Steve was Sonia and Darlene's brother which made him even more special to us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all as you bare the loss of Stephen. May God bless each and every one of you.

Although I haven't seen Steve in the over 30 years since moving out of state, I was saddened to learn of his passing - Steve was a roommate in the Pentagon dorm at LSU in a block that included Guy Hokanson and Jeff Jones - Steve helped boost my appreciation for music, maybe even for design (Steve supervised our re-painting the dorm room, and in tasteful colors!). A gentleman whose playful and dry humor I'll always remember - very sorry to hear he's gone.

Steve, I enjoyed the many years of singing and playing music with you. I will miss our fun arguments about my background vocals on "Let's get it on". The five of us made quite a team and you lead the way with your soulful drumming and subtle cues when the song would change. Awesome Greg Allman and Van Morrison vocals. Loved the way you would change up lyrics to get a laugh. No one will able to fill those drum pedals. Miss you, man.

Carolyn, I met Steve several years ago through his business... he repaired a post on one of our 4 poster beds, later built a beautiful cabinet for our foyer to display our crystal and later repaired our dining table for our breakfast area and refinished table and chairs... he was by far one of the finest men I have ever done business with... as for his wood working there may be some as good as Steve, BUT there are none better. You, your family and America has lost a great talented gentleman.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you-all...

It is with great sadness that Marie and I feel after hearing about the loss of a dear friend, Steve. He was such a talented guy that I learned something new every time I visited his shop. We will always remember Steve when we look at a beautiful woodworking piece of his in our house. We are sorry we are unable to attend his service because of being in Houston with our kids. Our prayers will continue and are just a phone call away. Eddy and Marie Frois (Destrehan)

Darlene and Family, I am so sorry to hear about your brother Steve. He was a great man, full of many talents, always full of jokes and filling rooms with laughter. I have many memories from when I was a young girl with your family, the many laughs and the times shared in his company. He always took the time to catch up with happenings in our life and was genuinely interested in what we were up to. He always went out of his way to make sure we were included and welcome. Those are memories I will certainly never forget. Many thoughts and prayers for you and your family during this difficult time.
