Susan Frances Thompson

SUSAN FRANCES THOMPSON passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and unwavering dedication to making the world a better place. She touched countless lives across the country, and her memory will be cherished by scores of friends and loved ones.
Born on March 10, 1946, in Atlanta, GA, Susan spent her formative years in a variety of communities, including Cleveland, OH, and Louisville, KY, where she graduated from high school. Her academic journey led her to Hanover College, where she earned her BA degree, and later to the University of Iowa, where she obtained her Master's degree.
Susan's career began in education, teaching at both high school and college levels. However, her deep love for the outdoors and her exceptional leadership skills drew her to the Girl Scouts. She found her true calling working in summer camps and eventually transitioned to a professional career within the organization. Her tenure included impactful roles at the Delaware Raritan and Heart of Ohio Girl Scout Councils before she assumed the position of CEO of the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council in Charleston. Susan served in this role for an impressive 22 years, leaving an indelible mark on the organization before her retirement.
Her community work included serving on the Board of Directors of Goodwill and the Education Committee and as an Elder of First Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Rotary Club of Charleston.
A woman of many interests, Susan was an avid golfer and an enthusiastic traveler. Her adventures took her far and wide, including an African safari, journeys through Europe, Alaska, and Panama Canal cruises, as well as numerous Caribbean getaways.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Henry Thompson Jr. and Frances Brady Thompson Hathaway, as well as her brother, Thomas. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and adventure.
In honor of her wishes, those who choose to pay tribute to Susan may make donations to First Presbyterian Church in lieu of flowers. Her kindness and dedication to her community will long be remembered and celebrated by all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Friday, May 30 at 1 p.m., with a reception following.
